Re: Dove opener pics.. - 09/01/22 03:49 PM

Went out to public just to say I did. Not much flying, but 1 for 1 shooting. I’ll take it compared to my goose-egg on a paid field last year.
The real hunt comes this weekend.

Got lucky. Two weeks ago there were literally 6 birds. They brought a lot of friends.

I’m surprised, I thought you were always first on over priced items!

I’ll take your waterfowl stamp for $20

The birds in uvalde are flying, the white wing are flying in the upper atmosphere. 4 birds each morning shy of a limit though. I also got my first pigeon and saved all the hearts. It’s also great seeing water all over the place out here.

Re: Dove opener pics.. - 09/02/22 08:14 PM

I forgot pictures. This opener was the best I've ever seen. 100s of birds seen in just a couple of hours, until I got hot and thirsty. A good shot gunner could have limits in an hour or two. I got 7 and was pretty happy with that. Pretty darn good for public hunting. This morning was a bust - I never even saw a bird for the first hour, and even that I had to drag up and move to where no one else was.

The best part of the hunt was billy hunt coming over to visit wife and me. We got to drink some beer and watch a backcountry gully washer roll in.

Re: Dove opener pics.. - 09/02/22 10:23 PM

easy limits yesterday and this morning. I shot 55 shells for 30 birds and was back at the truck cleaning birds with a cold beer in hand by 8 both mornings. Throckmorton Tx.

What we noticed was the high amount of northern birds already down here. About half my birds were northern birds

Hadn’t even gone this year yet. Two reasons, have only seen 2 dove in the area, and hadn’t got my butt to get a license! bang hopefully will change that tomorrow!!! up

South Dakota mostly. But Eastern Montana had a few representatives.

Re: Dove opener pics.. - 09/04/22 01:28 AM

Had a blast Thursday morning with a limit. Friday was a little slower where we managed 8 birds hunting till 10am. Today was tuff. Somehow managed to get half dozen. Boy these birds learn fast. My girls batted 100% not losing a single bird. A few of the retrieves were in some thick and hairy stuff that I honestly didn’t think the bird would be located in. But they did, and brought ever bird to hand. Now I must admit, using a pointer for retrieving requires a certain amount of patients as they must point the bird for a good three minutes before fetching and bringing it to hand.

Re: Dove opener pics.. - 09/04/22 03:03 AM

Today was my opener. I took the 10 month old pudelpointer pup. Today was his first hunt so the day was about him. We hunted a 120 acre goat weed field with no other hunters. The little rascal exceeded my expectations today. We had a short window between thunderstorms. Everything was dripping wet and I did not know if the birds would fly. It was slow but I was able to scratch nine birds out of five flights for him before lightning put us back in the truck. The field we hunted is pretty nasty cover. The first flight I just shot one to see how he was going to do. No breaking. Mark was so so but he stuck with it and rooted the first one out. Delivered at heel with a nice soft mouth. Progressed to doubles on the second flight and it went off pretty well. After the second flight he had his eyes up scanning the sky. I have been itching to get him out all summer and today was a good day.

I was only able to squeeze in one hunt on Saturday afternoon. Not a ton of birds, but I was able to squeeze in a limit.

Little cool front came in and it was possibly the nicest sit I have had.

Re: Dove opener pics.. - 09/07/22 03:31 PM

Sitting on the porch at camp early Thursday afternoon and watched about 50 or so birds fly into the nearby sunflower patch. We loaded up and went to the field. Buddy shot 1 bird and then the bottom fell out. Retreated back to the front porch and waited it out until it quit raining about 6:30. Went back but the birds had left. Moved further into the pasture to a known flyway and sat there until sundown but nothing. First opener in many, many years that I didn't fire a shot but I'm not complaining. We really needed the rain. Couldn't hunt Friday but Saturday went to a different place a few miles from the first one and it was pretty decent. Didn't get any pics but 4 of us got 48.

White-wings & eurasians, saw zero mourning doves. After last year's bust of seeing zero birds, this year's hunt and feast was good.

Re: Dove opener pics.. - 09/08/22 01:48 AM

I’ve had a rough 10+ years of dove hunting (could count my limits on one hand). Found an opening weekend hunt near Wichita Falls this year and shot 24 mourning, 3 white wing, 12 eurasians, and 4 pigeons (43 birds) in 2 days.

Probably could’ve shot 60+ birds if I had the time to practice before the hunts hammer

We had a good opening day hunt this past Saturday in SE Louisiana - 28 dove - A friends family farm in Folsom. Ready for the teal action Saturday.

My dad would make a bet at any time, for any amount, with anyone, that it would rain between opening day and Labor day. 9/10 times he would win.

Finally went last weekend. Wife hunts with me and had surgery the Friday before season opened. So we sat out til she felt like going out. Had to make my own “shade” with the truck just to stay cool. Ended up with 7. Kinda slow.
