How much fuel?

Just wondering how much yall spent on gas last season. Raising gas prices along with the cost of everything else becoming increasingly more expensive has me thinking how much it will effect my hunting next season. I dont get where all this money is coming from, house prices in DFW have sky rocketed, same with vehicle cost, groceries, gas, the list goes on, but no one can find workers.

I spent $3k in gas during November, December and January. I make alot of day trips to the lake and back home, normal round trip is 150-200 miles. That going to be $100 a trip if gas gets to $5 a gallon.

If gas goes to what it is predicted to I may have to cut back on some of my trips some.

I’ll be deer hunting on my place more for sure.

My deer lease is about 230 miles from my home. $5 gas isn’t my friend.

I understand due to work and family most people can't do this and not all people can or want to be self sufficient, but what I have done in these situations in the past is go less, but stay longer. If it is one of my leases, I have a free place to stay. if I am hunting public more than one day, I am setup with either a quick small camp setup for overnight or a full base camp setup for extended stays. Provided I stick to one destination and utilize free camping near the place I am hunting, fuel for a full weekend or week trip will cost me about the same as a day trip for the same destination. I had a work schedule for over 30 years that allowed me to do this when times where tough or fuel was high and now retired even more so. Still if a weekend warrior is only making day trips, they could turn those day trips into half as many two or three day weekend trips and cut their overall fuel costs in half.

I will say it definitely affects people's hunting. The last time fuel prices where through the roof I did a two week bird hunting trip to Colorado. I was paying over $5 for diesel. I seldom saw another bird hunter and don't think I ever did see a non Colorado resident hunter on that trip. That was very unusual for some of the popular public hunting places I was on.

Yeah, me too. But with duck hunting, I'm not gonna think too much about it till a few weeks before the season, and deal with the hand that is dealt at the time... Like I do every season... A lot can change from now till then..

But didn't you say you just bought a new mud buddy for next year? So you have to be looking forward to the season some.

Ya with a soon to be 9 year old I like being home with the family. I live hunting but going to her soccer or volley ball games and just being home with the family is more important to me. So burning fuel on day trips is just what its going to be for a while.

This year I drove to Kansas twice. The second trip was for 2 days of hunting. It was all the time I had. I drive every year to a quail spot that takes 4 hours to get there. I usually only hunt for about 4 hours and head home. I'm sure I won't change anything, I will just complain more.

I said I was thinking about it. Probably will not happen this year. But you are missing my point. My point is we always have these threads way before the season starts about what we are going to do, based on projections, like projected high fuel costs 8 months from now, or they are projecting mild weather, or a dry winter, or a bad hatch etc...I'm just saying I never worry about these projections, I'll scout before season starts and hunt no mater what, every season is different..That is just me.

I want to get a new motor because mine is getting old and so am I, not because of a projection of next duck hunting season. And I use my boat year around, not just duck hunting..

If they slash the 2023-2024 duck season dates like they have suggested it will most likely reduce global oil demand and balance all of our hunting budgets........

Yep, im following you. This is is just offseason BS talk to pass the time more than anything.

I imagine the guides/outfitters are going to take a hurting this season if gas stays $4+ a gallon through the rest of the year. Hopefully it sends some of these fly by night operations out of business.

Fuel prices and rising lease prices...bad combo for everyone.
