Ammo for next year?!

Ammo for next year?! - 02/01/22 01:40 PM

Just a PSA, boss is opening up the books for pre order with the supplies they know they have. It's been stated that next years ammo situation will be the same as this year. So the suggestion is to buy now before it's too late and you're having to ride the struggle bus trying to find ammo for the 22-23 season.

I bought from Boss last year great customer service, and the shells worked like any good shell should up up

Yep, I've heard prices will be going up, there will continue to be a run on ammo and we can continue to expect shortages.

Boss #2 or #3 will give you the same results as steel BB.

Re: Ammo for next year?! - 02/02/22 01:17 PM

Since my sporting clays is down to once/month or so, I'm good for Dover, Quail, and clays for a couple of years. I need to pick up some #6 and #4s ...we got caught flat footed in SD back in November.

Cabelas online has some kent in stock. Just ordered a case of #4's.
I ordered 2 cases of boss last summer, did t shoot 1 shell of it this past season. Kent's just seem to always get the job done for me.

Emails from Rogers said they have duck loads.

Re: Ammo for next year?! - 02/15/22 05:03 PM

Was at academy this past weekend and they had winchester drylok 12ga 3" for $35 a box. No thanks

Id be suprised if we can find shells for less than $25 a box next fall.

Well see what lead cost, that may significantly impact my clay shooting this offseason.

I will agree with you that "Heavy Metal" is not what they hype it up to be. True "Hevi-Shot" is a very good shell. They say its heavier than lead so my guess is they are using something similar to ITX13. However, i will argue that any of these bismuth/lead products should be chokeed imp mod/full with a standard constriction choke and not a wad stripping choke similar to pattern master.

I haven't, I've heard it's good for steel, but it's still steel.
You'd be better off with boss #5. A denser pattern and better long range knockdown

I don't shoot #5, but I shoot 4's. The 20 gauge is all I use, and we mainly hunt geese and crane. I smoked a greater Canada on the lazy day of season at 30 or so yards I run the Carlson's bismuth extended range choke.

I suppose Boss shells do a fine job of killing based on reports on this forum, but so does steel and you or anyone else isn't going to change my mind on that front. I've seen a lot of birds drop from steel. I've heard all the arguments before so no need to bring them up here. I like that Boss is trying to better the game and a once little guy / start up is making a way in a very competitive market. Its good for all of us in a way.

Does anyone have experience with Apex they would like to share?

I agree 100% - I have 2 cases of boss sitting in the closet. I guess I'll shoot it one day or sell it in a few years when the price doubles.i have never had a problem killing ducks with steel I side 40 yards.

I did but and shoot some apex duplex loads and that stuff is the [censored]. 1oz of steel and 1/4oz tss. Runs about $45 for a box of 25. But that stuff no [censored] kills ducks to 70 yards.

Re: Ammo for next year?! - 02/26/22 04:41 PM

heres SOME of what I learned this year about SOME ammo....

I've been shooting heavy shot and kents the last 7 years. 2 years ago I picked up the cheap, federal blue box #4 for early teal season...figured I had enough to last 7 or 8 years just for that season. Well this year I could not find any ammo so I shot the blue box "junk" all season. And to slam the door shut on any arguments I do not care to partake in....I took that no good blue box federal junk to Wyoming for a goose hunt. 4 days we shot limits of large geese in pit blinds. Yes they mostly were feet down but I took some pretty long shots and downed a couple geese. My shots at ducks were the same as the last 7 years. I couldn't tell a difference.

Anybody know where I can get some cheap, blue box federal #4, in 12g junk?

I think you missed the point. It's steel. All steel performs the same in knockdown power. It's like you're expecting a magic bullet from steel. Does it kill yes, steel is just the most inferior load on the market.

That duck was being killed by straight tss. Duplex loads like that are a marketing gimmick. You know how long that shot string would be. That TSS leaves from the barrel first and just continously gaps the steel. From my book that I have, I don't think there's a steel that can actually cleanly kill a duck at 70 yards. Maybe T shot would.
So with that being said, you're a good shot killing ducks with .25 oz of shot.

YOU missed the point. I asked a question about a particular shell and you brought up your love child Boss shells. There are aspects to shells other than the metal. Is it dirty, does it pattern well out of a particular gun/choke, did it cycle etc. I get that you think Boss is the "best" and anyone that doesn't shoot them is inferior, old, stuck in their ways, etc. I am none of those, but I also know steel works and there is enough information out there for me to not make the switch at this time.

Re: Ammo for next year?! - 02/27/22 06:02 PM

I should have added, these ducks im shooting at 70 yards are birds that landed out of range. You know how they do towards the end of the season.. they want in the hole but they know not to land in the dekes. Shot string doesn't matter when they are sitting in the water. And yes its the tss that is killing the birds. Look at what the turkey guys are doing with .410's and tss. You only need 1/4oz of 7.5 tss for ducks.

Loved them. I shot the 12g. sorties last season with good success as well. All my family back in Arkansas have gone to 20's over the last several years, so thought Id give it a try. Actually see why. 20's lighter and I feel it shoots better than my 12. Shooting both guns with a Rob Roberts T3 choke in both. Will most likely stay with this combo for a while. Besides, my wife shoot a 20 as well. Makes buying shells easier as well.

I shoot the middle grade, orange box federal #3. I don't know if it shoots any different than the blue, which I also have, but it definitely runs cleaner and pellets are more uniform.

Usually I buy it at Roger's and noticed last week they had the blue box, but it ain't cheap. What went for $89 a case a couple three years ago is now $210.

Yep, I think cheap shells will never be seen again. Gunna be hard to find shells less than $20 a box.

I shoot the 5's out of 28's & 410's. One thing about bismuth is it is a little lighter than lead. 6's would probably work fine over decoys. Would be more like lead 7 1/2's or so.

As far as Dove ammo, I only fired 3 shots last year so we're good if there's any birds this year.

I had an opportunity to buy 4 cases of apex #2 steel. I’ll be running that brand for the first time all next year. I’ll update once season kicks off. I do plan on buying a case of the boss for the 20ga. I hear great things and can’t deny the cult following but no firsthand experience.

Have family and friends in Arkansas shooting Apex and they like them. Dont think you'll have issues with them at all. You'll prolly like them alot.
