Duck adventures

Duck adventures - 10/19/21 11:42 PM

Looking for recommendations on a big hunt for next year. Would like to hunt mornings and evenings if possible.

Options I'm considering.
Mexico - can duck hunt in the morning and dove or quail hunt in the afternoon.
Nebraska or the Dakota- duck/goose in the morning and pheasant in the afternoon
Texas coast - duck hunt in the am then dove hunt or fish in the afternoon.
Alaska - blast and cast combo
Canada - this is probably on the bottom of the list, just never cared to hunt ducks in the field and shoot a bunch of unplummed ducks.
I have no interest in Argentina, Uruguay, peru, and what not.

I normally like hunting over water and boat rides.

Anyone have any suggestions.

No real experience, but I would go north, US option 1, Canada option 2. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Freelance it anywhere you want to go in the US. See the sights and maybe shoot some birds.

I would like to do that, problem is it is tough for me to be gone more than. 5 days. So you figure a day to get there, and a day to get back home that only gives me 3 days to hunt and find birds.

I would assume if you go to Mexico you will be the only American hunter down there. You will have all the game to yourself.

Probably because there are no mallards down there?

Any road trips I make are right up the central fly away, that is just me tho.

Mexico is down on the list. I know 99% of the time everything will be fine. But that Arlington fireman was killed not to.long ago, and now you have this hostage situation in Hati. Not really feeling like going down there anytime soon.

I’d go coastal Alaska for king eider and harlequin.

If you go to Saskatchewan, I promise you'd change your mind on field mallards and them not being plumed out

Duck and Upland in the Dakotas would be my #2 from your list, Saskatchewan #1

One thing that does interest me in Canada is chasing snow geese in the morning, then id be happy with an afternoon duck or crane hunt.

That's how most do it. Can't hunt Dark Geese after 12pm so they shoot geese in the morning and ducks in the evening.

Ryan Livingston Rock Prairie Outfitters Western Nebraska on the North Platte River. I've never been around that many mallards in my years of hunting. Very nice accommodations, good food, pitblinds ect..

This is high on my list, I follow some social media outfitters that shoot harlequin, scooters, goldeneye, mergansers and other divers. Then fish or chase Ptarmigan in the afternoon.

I'm not really a species chaser, or looking to cross birds of a list. To me its more about the experience and just hunting cool places and memories.

For me, that’s exactly why I’d do it. Aside from a chance at some very rare birds, where else are you gonna hunt that has a backdrop like Alaska? Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to do a northern prairie hunt in the Dakotas or Canada, or a timber hunt in Arkansas but for the overall experience I’d have to give the nod to Alaska. Of course, it’d be a once in a lifetime trip for me. Whatever direction you go, best of luck and take plenty of pictures.

Had a lot of fun in Kansas last year. Did duck and goose in the morning, and pheasant in the afternoon.

Coming back from a Wyoming pronghorn hunt about 10 years ago in mid October, I saw an unbelievable number of birds on the n Platte. Mostly private but it's on my list.
South Dakota is a draw state but it doesn't take a lot of points.

Nebraska would be high on my list - Mallards and Honkers then upland birds in the afternoon.
Arkansas timber then specks in the evening.
Alaska could be incredible for scenery and auxiliary activities.
NE Canada is interesting to me. Black ducks and the regular suspects. Fishing and grouse hunting in the down time.

You're in the fun stages of planning...whatever you choose will be an adventure.

My broither and I just happened to ctch an hour long flight from one of the refuge sections of the river to a feed lot about a half a mile away. We couldn't keep up with counting. I'd eat my hat if you proved it wasn't a minimum of 50,000 birds.

You have any recommendations on who to hunt with in Saskatchewan?

In Canada, look at prairie limit outfitters.
Kansas birds, look at bluestem. Can do waterfowl and pheasant.

You can also get on getducks.com to look at other reputable outfits

Just put a deposit down for a Washington seaduck hunt for January of 24, crazy I had to book that far out but thats what it took for prime dates.

Re: Duck adventures - 10/27/21 11:20 PM

why go for sea duck in Washington when Oklahoma, Kansas and North Platte down the road? New Stuttgart. Mallards, Pinnies

Re: Duck adventures - 10/28/21 02:16 AM

Seaducks interest me bc it is something entirely different. The idea of hunting the puget sound out of a layout boat, or off the beach, putting out crab traps in the morning and picking them up after the hunt to have fresh crab for dinner, the scenery looks awesome, and it just seems like an adventure and not just a hunt.

I hunt 30 some odd days every season in Texas and Oklahoma. I do enough of the drive up to the blind in a truck or SXS and go on a hunt. Its great, shoot alot of birds every season doing that. Just figure that is what most the central flyway is going to be.

I have been talking to a guide in Montana who runs the Yellowstone River in a jet boat and does really good on the mallards. I am very interested in that adventure as well. I am trying to find someone who does something similar on the north Platte or other rivers alittle closer to TX.

I'm still considering Canada 🇨🇦 but I really like hunting ducks over water and out of boats, or using a boat to get to the hunting location.
