Duckweed.....in new pond.

Duckweed.....in new pond. - 02/02/21 08:30 PM

So, now that this season is over we are looking at doing a little project in this offseason on our farm. We currently have about 8 acres levied and water controlled. Below that is a small cattle pond that was already there with big acorn trees almost in a large circle with one or 2 in the middle. We are looking at expanding this pond to about 2 acres in size and leave all acorn trees around it. And maybe one or both in the middle.
We have noticed that the ponds in our area with duckweed floating on top just gets pounded by Gadwalls and Mallards. Just trying to add to the buffet line!

My question is, can you just bucket some duckweed from another pond and dump in yours? Ive heard thats all it takes, but feel it cant be that simple. Anybody got any experience with this stuff? Growing it, moving it, etc.

Short answer is yes. Long answer is technically it's illegal so don't get caught.

It's not illegal since it is a native plant. Put some water in an ice chest, grab a clump of the duckweed and transport to your pond.

You are on the right idea to add to the buffet table. But let me cuation you, not all oaks can stand water for long periods of time. There is lot of concern on the consist flooding in hard woods timbers on the production levels of flooded oaks. So, find out what types of oaks are near by and there wet/ dry needs.

As to the duck weed, it can be a nuisance if the birds do not show up to feed on it in that it grows fast, other wise it good food.
