Between Wigeon and Gadwall decoys, which would you choose for north Texas if you could only choose one? Thanks.

Gadwall, I have all the other though but just don’t use them on the spot we hunt

I’ll go opposite, I use Wigeon for 2 reasons.

1. The white on them is good for visibility
2. I use a whistle for a call as well, and I guess it never hurts to have Wigeon decoys If I’m blowing a wigeon call. Everyone uses a mallard call, and mallard dekes, doesn’t hurt to be different

Gadwall, imo. I think they’re pretty universal. I’ve used the hens to add to my teal season spread as well. I have 6 species of decoys but there’s always a few gadwall dekes on every hunt.

Hunted the Red River for years. Mallards, Pintail and Teal decoys were the way to go. Now I have my own private place, going with mainly Gadwall, with some mallard and pintails mixed in. And always teal.

If you are hunting gadwall and wigeon I like doing half gadwall and half coots here in Louisiana. I have found over the years if you find coots in the marsh you will find gadwall. I think gadwall look for coots because wherever the coots are there is usually a lot of vegetation in the pond. You can't go wrong with coot decoys.

Gadwall. I do agree though that the white on the wigeon would catch the eye well. I use gadwalls and mostly all the rest are hen mallards with a couple bluebill drakes for the white attractive feature.

Not sure what it is about pintail decoys but they seem to attract ducks. On my lease up in OK 2 years ago, our 15 acre lake was plum full. Not many puddle ducks but divers everywhere. Had canvasbacks come to those pintail decoys all winter long. They with both ways for puddlers or divers. Didn’t have one canvasback decoy in my possession.
