Which Would You Rather Have?

I normally buy a new motion decoy every year and am deciding between these two options.

There is the "wonderduck" which I have not seen used in person but looks intriguing. I like the splash it makes but do not know the durability of it. Looks like it would be easy to break.

The other option is the pulsators. I have used these before and am leaning toward buying these as I know they are reliable.

If you have experience with either of these let me know. I'd really like to refrain from buying both, but could be talked into it.

That's kind of what I was thinking. What about the mallard battleship swimmer? I've seen this guy used before and seemed to work well.

I bet that one is a little better, the problem with the wonder duck is if anything is around its tangled up in the moving feet.

get the pulsator...or just a jerk string and keep it simple

I keep a jerk string but a lot of times I get caught up in working/calling ducks and forget about the jerk string. Good call on the wonder duck. I could see flooded smart weed being a big issue with those leg spinners. Looks like I'll be getting pulsators.

I have both of the above and like each in their own way. I normally hunt 20-30 times during teal/duck season and use both depending on the conditions/location/species I'm after. I take very good care of my stuff, and I have yet to have any problems in 3 years with my Wonderduck and 1 year with the Pulsator.

Wonderduck pros/cons
Highly visible
Great movement on open water. NOT good in grass, sticks, vegetation.
Ripple effect is very good.
Battery life is the biggest advantage of this decoy - runs on (2) D batteries and coppertop Duracells tend to last me 25-30 hours.
Great in all water depths.

Higdon pro/cons
Good water effects/splashes.
Very stationary and drift very little even with a stout wind.
Battery life is terrible - usually lasts 4-5 hours per charge.
Takes up minimal space when packed up and not in use.
Must have about 5" inches of water depth for it work good.
Works great when surrounded by vegetation/grasses as long as you make a few inches worth of space around it.

Pulsator. I only use mine when there is no wind or in a protected cove, you just want to get rid of the glass water, put some ripples in your spread, and pulsator probable does a better job of that, and probably more durable like you say.

Wonderduck looks awesome until the airtemp gets to about 32 degrees. Then it's falling over from weight of ice. Then if used around vegetation they suck there equally as bad.

Those do look nice but you can get a set of 4 Higdon pulsators fit about the same price

I like wonder duck and have about 12 of them. Walter is a good guy, honest and they are made 15 minutes from the house. They work, I promise you. Any motion is good motion.

We've been running a wonder duck for 3 years now with no issues. Had it out many times in freezing temps with no issues from the ice accumulation. We don't set it out in a bunch of vegetation so we don't run into any issues. It is great on tanks when there is no wind, the ripples it puts off will give all your other decoys motion.

Pulsator. Makes a ton of ripples.

When the Pulsator works, they are great. Bought a Pulsator XS Pintail Drake new from Macks, 2 seasons ago. It arrived a week before season started. Out of the box, bad wiring on the pump, had a short in it. They replaced it under warranty, but by the time I got the decoy back in the field, I had missed 2 opening weekends. That pump and wiring didn't make it 7 hunts before it messed up as well. By the time I was able to get a replacement, season was over. I let the decoy sit on my toolbox till season rolled around again last year. Installed the 2nd replacement pump, plugged it in to charge. Went to test it before taking it out in the field for opening weekend, no power. Pulled the battery and tested it with a multi-meter. Would not take or hold a charge. Tried to charge it 2 different ways, with the adapter, and then directly. No change. Called Higdon again. Could not get a replacement battery, they were on backorder almost all season. Decoy was less than a year old, and had 3 major issues with the decoy. No one would return my calls or email. I just wanted the expensive decoy I paid for fixed. It was hunted less than 10 times, and I take care of my gear.

Now I'm not saying it's a bad product. I'm not saying not to get one. Just be aware you could have issues with it. I really enjoyed hunting with it when it was working. I will eventually get it repaired and put it back in service.
