Opening morning dove

Opening morning dove - 09/01/19 05:06 PM

I hunted 100 acres of stripped sunflowers just West of Graford. Very nice morning. I was on a high spot and could see all of the field. I saw a total of 5 birds. Only 1 was killed on field. Only saw 3 on the way home. It’s got to get better! Enid

Lot of shooting south of Graford. Unfortunately, we were on the wrong end of the field.

Hunted near La Coste - corn field. Special WW zone. All whitewings. Not quite a limit - but got 13 birds; fun hunt with family

I think that area is suffering the same as we are (Throckmortan). Last year there was no feed and no birds. This year we have the feed....at least decent feed but not great. What I think is the local birds suffered another bad hatch year like last year.

Maybe next year we get back normal

I haven't seen birds out in Graford since the big fire in 2011. That year it looked like something you would see in Mexico. After that it progressively got worse until it wasn't worth going anymore.

Shackelford County. Wife and I shot 4 opening day...but 1 went in the middle of the pond and with no wind that's where he stayed, 1 was hit but ended up flying away crippled, and 2 for the broiler. Might have only seen a dozen or so. Only saw 2 this morning... out of range of course! Had more fun shooting my wife's new AR afterwards. Heard quite a few shots from the fields close by opening morning but very few this morning. Oh well.

We had decent hunting two years ago. Didn't hunt it last year, no food. This year was not good so far but the table is set. Plants are a little green still.

We had several storms during nesting season where we got 50 MPH plus winds. It really hurt this years hatch.
If you have ever seen a dove's nest you get this. They put about 6 sticks in a tree and call it good!
We had some birds opening day and most got limits but it was terrible yesterday. The rains we got friday scattered the birds out badly.

Hunted Opening Day up at Wichita Falls. Morning was a little slow on birds. Our party of 3 was 1 limit, 6 and 3. Back out early afternoon and finished limits pretty quick. Went to another field for day 2 and zero birds flying anywhere. Outfitter had 9 fields and no birds anywhere. He called other outfitters in the area and no birds being sighted anywhere. It's like Day 2 am dove had just totally disappeared. Oh well, had great time and some fantastic poppers of dove breasts, japs with cream cheese wrapped in bacon for dinner opening night. It is a lifelong tradition to be out on Sept 1 even it no birds. Better than being at work or home.

A little slow down in Bell and Williamson counties on opening day. Fair opening day with anywhere from 0 to 10 birds among various hunters. September 2 was Slow, not many birds flying with 5 being the high kill.
