Nice squab

Re: Opening day pics - 09/01/19 06:11 PM

Yep, that field has some pigeons too. Shot 2 who were decoying like idiots.
Also shot a euro and a high crow. Crow needed 3 shots.
Only saw 1 whitewing
As soon as the farmer plows his milo, i ll drop 50 squab decoys with 2 spinners, it worked last year and shot 40.
That was in October.
There are about 8 groups of 20 squab flying over the field 50 yards up at around 8 am.
Its fun to throw 1200 pellets at them rats. rifle

The squab feeding in the fields in the Panhandle taste good.
Our city squab prolly chewing on used condoms behind 7/11, so no thanks.

Glad you got on'em. No pics for us. Luckily we had some red snapper in the freezer. We'll attack again at dawn.

Slow morning , but I got seven. I decided to skip the evening hunt, I bet there are a million on them.

Seven is still a good shoot, prolly above average.

I was gonna stop at 8 birds, to shoot this afternoon, but i much more prefer the early mornings.
There is just something about morning hunts i love.

I was happy with this East Texas solo hunt. I went today just to say I went. I was floored when quite a few birds started showing up. Best hunt I've had in 15 years.

Had to work this morning but scratched a limit out this afternoon near Woodson. Definitely nowhere near the numbers were used to

I got a pretty easy limit on the opener. This morning we set up in the wrong part of field....but would not have made much difference. Slow morning for sure for our area.

Re: Opening day pics - 09/02/19 06:16 PM

We got 1. My son has been hunting himself 4 years now and I have put him on 3 birds. 6 years ago you could kill a limit with a rock and he would fetch but not anymore with water and food everywhere now. Need a guided hunt I guess at this point.

Feathered beard of happiness after the few birds. One was winged and she had a blast picking it out of the air.

Ended up with 6 in the morning hunt out of the 7 I shot at. Early lunch and a nap, then hung out a while before heading out with my shotgun and a Shiner in the shade at camp, when a bonus collared flew by just in range.
[Linked Image]

Rosie flushed a hog in the thicket by the pond (to the left and not in this pic) and I had to call her off. She was chasing and growling. Then she thought we were duck hunting. She figured it out pretty quick.

Ended up getting #15 with 10 minutes to go. I don't think I've ever done that after hunting all day. Usually there are no birds or so thick the morning hunt gets it done. Was fun, Shiner and shade helped. Mon morning a few groups of hi flying white wings flew over, so I switched out to a full choke and #6s. A few low flying mourning doves buzzed by fast and without thinking I shot. Uhhh, yeah, not good.

Re: Opening day pics - 09/03/19 04:15 PM

Some of you guys did pretty good!

I didn't hunt, but was outside most of the weekend, don't think I heard 10 shots around here. Not seeing even the small amount of birds seen last year, which is odd. Seems we had a great Spring as far as rains and forage growth, temps have been mild overall as well.

Kast year we where covered up in November on tho, even good numbers of WW.

Hunted a 120 acre goat weed patch with my son by ourselves. Done by 8am. Pic is cricket delivering the first bird of the morning to me while there is still a little pink in the sky. Cricket is side eyeing the bird and looked quite pleased with things after rooting the first bird of the year out of the goat weed.

Wow! Small world indeed! I was invited by a good friend, Dr. R Cockrell and his brother, it was on of the best dove hunts I have ever been on in a long time! Folks couldn't decide where to aim lol as they were coming in from all directions. Lots of folks I got to meet and the hospitality was awesome!

Re: Opening day pics - 09/06/19 07:19 PM

It was one of the best opening mornings I can remember in Young County. It took a little while for them to start flying, but then the floodgates opened up. I had my limit before 8:00. I watched them from our campsite that afternoon, and there were still birds everywhere. They didn't show back up the 2nd morning. Guys in my group only got 3-6 birds a piece.
