Teal on the Coast

My brother and I do a lot of kayak fishing in the Port Aransas Rockport area. The past few years we have been talking about getting into duck hunting but it has never happened. This year we are finally going to give it a try. We want to use Teal season as a trial before the regular season. Our plan is to hunt off a shoreline versus out of a blind. I have a couple of questions.

What is the minimum amount of decoys needed for Teal and big ducks down there? I know that during big duck season the more the better. We will be using kayaks which will limit how many we can take.

What is the best way to take care of our guns in the saltwater? I feel like hunting out of kayaks will make this even tougher. We don't have nice guns but still want to take care of them.

Any other advice would be appreciated. We are headed down Saturday for a fishing trip and will do a little scouting too.

Mojos, mojos, more mojos.

I went teal hunting last year one day and actually forgot my dam decoys. I keep my mojos in the boat and thats all I had that morning. What teal were on the lake came in just fine with only 3 mojos going. That said I'd take 2 dozen decoys and however many mojos you got.

Is this your first time to go duck hunting? It sounds like it. Not sure if you thought about this, but early teal season is not for beginners, you need to make sure you can ID ducks and know what a teal is and what is not. I never hunted the coast, but in north texas, you need to be able to ID ducks because large percent are not teal.

I wouldn’t use a mojo at the coast. Once the redheads get there during normal season you will be able to shoot two a day. It takes some effort to get to where any other ducks are hiding in that area. I would take a guide to start with, and use a watertight gun bag, and clean the gun when you get home.
