Adding new decoys to spread

Adding new decoys to spread - 10/24/18 08:59 PM

So my basic spread is, 6-12 mallards, 3-6 woodies and 6-12 teal obviously depending on where and when I’m hunting . Thinking about adding a half dozen gaddies or a half dozen wigeon, hunt ne Tex and near brookshire Texas. Which would you buy for these areas?

I’d get the gads, but honestly I don’t think the ducks give a sh!t

Early season my spread consist of mostly greys, widgeon and teal. I’ll throw in a couple mallards to draw attention. I’d go with the gad.

I've got gads. Sounds like something I got from some strange I met at the bar but they're dekes.

Widgeon for the color

If you really want some pop and to differentiate your spread grab some spoony decoys. The white draws attention from a longer ways off and they don't see them in spreads often.

Whichever ones are cheaper because it doesn't matter.

We recently added 2-3 canvasbacks into our spread and it really seems to catch their eye.

My spread is gaddies, wigeon, pintail and the few cans.

If you had to choose I second adding the wigeon for the color.

if you are looking for something to catch their eye a little more i agree with the statements above... (widgeon, pintails, shovelors) i throw a couple bluebills on the far side of my spread or a couple canadas if looking to draw attention a little more. pintails are tough on the decoy bag.

Sprigs! Since they are typically racist sumbiches, set them up on furthest from you on the edge of range to a side so it doesn't block the hole. Works great in big water for getting attention.

If I'm on a tank or large deeper pond I replace them with Cans.

It's a fun game, but irrelevant ----------- get the biggest decoys you can find. It's the old story ------- put 5 different kinds of decoys in your front yard and get 100 yards away and drive by at 20 mph. See if you can tell what kind each is. How you put them out is relevant.

Pretty sure ducks have better eyes from those distances then we do but I get your drift.

Yep, pick the decoys you like the best because the ducks don't care.

I use 3.4 teal, 7.5 wigeon hybrids, 5 3/4 mallard/gadwall/pintail crossdressers, and a half dozen that don't want to be called a "duck", "drake", "hen", "deke" or "dyke". They identify as "waterfowl".

Another option is going to the area you plan to hunt, scouting, and actually seeing what types of ducks show up.

Oh would that be a good idea? The main place I use decoys is 4.5 hours away so it’s a little hard to go scout.
