Duckweed

Duckweed - 05/11/18 06:07 PM

Another thread got me thinking about Duckweed and I have a couple questions. I realize it can take over the tank and planting might work better. In my situation I can't control the water and do not need to worry about fish kill off. Tank ranges from 2-5 acres depending on rain and can be 8ft deep when full at its deepest.

1. How much duckweed do you need to get it growing in a tank - 1 cup, 2lbs, etc
2. If pounds are needed does anyone know where you can order it or collect it?
3. How quickly do you need to get it in the new spot from when it is collected?
4. What is the best way to transport it?
5. Is there anything else I need to think about?
6. If you know of a place from Austin to Carbon (Eastland Co.) where I can collect it I would appreciate the lead.

Good questions, like you I have a bigger tank that we aren’t worried about unless there is some longer term issue I’m not aware of. I already have a wetlands I plant in millet and will add barnyard grass this year.

Thanks a lot for the offer. The ranch is close enough that I could make this work. I’ll PM you for details.

FYI... it's illegal to possess or transport duckweed in Texas.

when transplanting a lot of duckweed, ive laid a tarp down on a trailer, put a lot of duckweed on top of it, made sure it was good and wet, put another tarp on top and went with it. obviously i would try to get it there as fast as possible, but i would try not to let i dry out. although, i have seen some that dried out on the bank when water level fell, water level rose and it turned back green again. Some ponds ive transplanted to, it didn't grow at all, and others it exploded in. the water has to be right. under optimum conditions(fertility, ph, and water temp) duckweed can double in surface area every 2-3 days. It may be illegal, but what isn't these days. When will tpwd starting harassing and ticketing ducks, cranes, water turkeys, etc for transplanting?
