Ah the 70s

How many of you remember the point system of the early 70s. Fun times...
Always tried to shoot the canvasback last. We came in once with about 9 or 10 ring necks each. Game warden tried to say they were redheads. We spent a good 15 minutes showing him those pictures on the point sheet before he was convinced. Those point sheets weren't exactly true to color.

Remember them fondly! Loved it back then. Lots of birds & not a lot of flatbills!

So what happpened? Can some one fill in us younger hunterswho weren’t around to enjoy the system. Why did they change it and when? I have read a few threads about the point system over the last few years I have been here.

I contribute the point system as the reason I never grew up duck hunting.

My Uncle and cousin were big time duck hunters. By the time I was old enough to go, over protected mother, they stopped hunting ducks.

I asked my cousin why did they stop duck hunting and he said it got to the point where you'd go out, shoot one duck, and the hunt was over.

He and my Uncle got on a deer lease and that was that.

What is really crazy is I found out from my Dad that my Grandpa used to love to bird hunt. Yet growing up we did rabbit, squirrel, or deer hunting.

Now keep in mind they were in the Mississippi flyway, so I think their point system was different then central.

Poster brings back memories. The earlier one had a ring neck on it. I guess later they just lumped them in with scaup. But that was always my question. What about ducks not on the list?

Pintails were 10 points. It was frustrating if you shot a canvasback early. Shoot him late though and you felt like you got away with something. Gws would ask us when we shot the canvasback. "Last Sir". Uh huh, was the usual reply.
Fond memories but I definitely don't want to go back to the point system.

The perfect day was to shoot 9 pintails and a canvasback for the tenth. Don't think the game wardens would stick a thermometer in the ducks butt to see if it was colder or warmer than the 10 point ducks. Rarely did it work out where you would get a can for the last duck. When we were ready to go we just agreed to finish out our 10th bird and then go.

I saw many 10 pintail straps come out the marsh when I was a kid.

It was rare for us where we hunted to get our limit unless we wanted to shoot Ring necks. The big issue was when two shot at the same can early. I tried to be the first one to say nice shot...:)

I got auto corrected. I meant don't think a warden wouldn't stick a thermometer up a ducks butt in a heartbeat.

I'm glad they don't check the hunters with a thermometer,.........................................

Reminds me of an old joke
Game walks up on a hunter and asks to see the ducks. He picks up the first duck and sticks his finger in the ducks anus pulls it out and smells it. Tells the hunter, this is a Louisianan duck, do have a Louisianan duck license? Hunter says yes, hands it to him. GW picks up the next duck does the same thing and says, this is a Mississippi duck, do you have MS duck license? Hunter says yes and hands it to him. This goes on for several ducks from different states and after the last duck the GW says you're pretty set up to duck hunt around here, where you from? Hunter drops his pants and bends over and tells the GW, you tell me

I went thru it then and before then. The point system could get you into some trouble. Shoot a mallard hen and you were pretty much done for the day. Hens were 90 points if I remember right.

Well you never know, it might be one of those cases where it's only wierd the first time.
