What's your longest shot??????

What's your longest shot?????? - 10/23/17 01:34 AM

I shot 2 ducks last year at 60yds but I usually won't attempt a shot that far. I feel comfortable at 40 to 45yds depending on the situation. What's y'alls longest shot?

Skybuster you are.

I'm a decent caller so I shoot them 20-30y feet down. I also pattern my gun to shoot perfect at those distances.

Bob Brister killed pigeons at 100 yds...
full choke 1100, I think...
pigeon shoots for $ are a high-stakes deal...
kinda like steer tripping...you haveta be invited...
I've seen some way-up pass shots on geese, too....
100+yds...
we open up on them coming over camp...
pretty cool watching one fall from stratosphere...

In the era of shooting steel, about 60 at the sprig I got on the wall from the coast. Just kept doin that pinner thing, circling just out of my comfort zone. Finally had enough and took the shot.

It's all about where I am. I hunt a lot of big lakes so I don't normally do that. The chance of losing a cripple is too high. If I'm on a pond or somewhere that I know I won't lose one (like a big marsh flat) I'll let it fly out to 50 every now and then.

I used my rangefinder once to gauge the out edges of my rice check on a federal spot, the outer edge was 65 yards, a sprig paddled in right at the edge, and I took him by lobbing in 3 1/2" #2s, how in the world do you guys estimate how high ducks are above you? I know I've led high ducks so far that it seems like 3 seconds before the BBs get there, and I've shot at geese where you could actually hear the BB's hitting them but never phased them.

I have too but back in the day when lead was legal. 00 buck. All it took was one pellet. One hit just below breast bone and the other, a speck, I busted a wing. Brother yelled at me for sky busting and I said it is not sky busting when they hit the ground.

It's not skybusting if you hit it.

Yes it is. If you mis, it's called skyblasting.

Re: What's your longest shot?????? - 10/26/17 08:15 PM

It's skyblasting if the distance makes you question the ethics of it. For me that's beyond 40yds. Most of my shots are 25yds or closer. I haven't bragged about questionable hunting ethics since high school, good times!

Exactly, I could skybust with the best of them if I used full choke, 3 1/2 inch #2s, but then I would obliterate the 20 yard duck over the deeks.

Around 60 65 yards

Re: What's your longest shot?????? - 10/29/17 12:09 PM

People sky bust because they don’t know how to duck hunt. Concealment and set up flaws.

We typically don’t shoot them unless they’re 10-15 yards out tennis racket range or 25 to 30 yards outskirts of decoys. Many hunts result in limits with less than 10-12 shells fired per gun- I get them tight most of the time.

When there’s lack of wind and bad lighting- are presentations a bit different more- motion

Regularly shoot Dove at 60- 70 yards- Crippling ducks just not cool

X2.
Not very often do we take 40+ yd shots. If your setup is good there really shouldn't be a need to. Getting them where you want them to be is half the fun.

Air-to-air. Just trying to lighten this place up.

Re: What's your longest shot?????? - 10/31/17 12:13 PM

long shots occur sometimes especially late in the season when
the ducks are super pressured
they get decoy shy or call shy so yes, sometimes a LONGER shot
is required

15yds, I might try a further shot if the birds would let me.

Re: What's your longest shot?????? - 11/01/17 12:46 AM

Last year I hunted some late season blue quail on public New Mexico Sandhills. I switched to full choke & #6's the second day and shot some that were at least 75 yards.

Thought so. I got a chuckle out of it. Thanks for the levity.

Re: What's your longest shot?????? - 11/01/17 12:45 PM

Typically the edge of my spread is about 30 yards out. I try my absolute best not to shoot beyond that range. Having said that, I would say the farthest I've ever shot a duck would be at about 45 yards.

I have taken a goose on a pass shot. The flock was probably 60 yards up. Hard for me to gauge that though.

Re: What's your longest shot?????? - 11/06/17 03:44 AM

If you're shooting ducks at 65 yards you are a skybuster. That's not even debatable. There is no need to shoot thempast 40 max. 20 would be better. . If you can't get them closer than that then don't shoot and watch them and study them and interact with them and learn how to get them in closer. Learning how to do that will make you a better duck hunter, not learning how to hit them farther out.

Re: What's your longest shot?????? - 11/06/17 02:10 PM

you can load loads and shoot through the right gun and choke to consistently make kill shots at distances in the 60s. when you get ready to shoot ducks at 20, you simply "pull off" just a little bit. if you kill more than you miss, it isn't skybusting. I've watched people be unethical at 30 yds.
