Waterfowl Prep-work in FULL swing!

Waterfowl Prep-work in FULL swing! - 06/27/16 03:44 PM

Over the last 8-10 days we have finally got a break in the rain on a handful of our properties and have been able to get out and do some more work. Pulled water off a handful of ponds to create seed bed or to dry out so we can disc, planted a few others, flushed rice & a few of the new skid blinds have been delivered to property headquarters. The wet spring has really been good for the ponds that we have planted in the past as regrowth is coming up like crazy, just as good as when we planted it if not better. If we continue to miss the rain it'll be a busy next 8-10 days as we'll be planting and discing like crazy, along with getting new pit blinds sunk and a couple moved into better locations.

looks good. out of curiosity, are yall going to cut the rice or is it strictly for hunting? I leave mine, but it would be nice to be closer to some equipment and dryers....rice can get a little pricey.

99% of it gets harvested. We have one pond that we are experimenting with this year that we planted a section of rice instead of millet to see how it does. We didn't plant it near as thick as farmers do that plan to harvest because we didn't want to choke out any natural vegetation from growing along with it.

Disced, leveled and scratched ponds look so good before we plant them! Another good day of planting yesterday before the rain.

Another couple ponds planted and fertilized this afternoon. Will be flushing within the next 2-3 days. Rice on one of our farms looks REALLY good as does most in the area. Less than 2 months till teal season and we're getting more prepared everyday! Still lots to do, but we're knocking things out almost daily.

you get out what you put in with most things, especially duck hunting. there are some habitats like GTR that don't require as much work and maintenance, but fields/flats whatever you call it take a lot to have I perfect.

The prep-work NEVER stops! We disced a handful more ponds over the last couple days and will be planting around/during the rain today and tomorrow. Pulled water on a couple more ponds last week so we can plant now that they are a mud flat. Knocked out some levee maintenance on a few ponds as well. Depending on when/where/how much rain we get will depend when the next couple of pits go into the ground. Still have a handful more ponds that will be getting disced & planted over the next week or two that will be set aside for big duck season. Rice harvest is in full swing right now and we can already smell the mosquito spray and gun powder that fills the air during teal season!

NO ONE puts in more time or effort than we do to make sure everything is done right. We have no offseason! Prep-work for the next season begins pretty much as soon as one season ends. We don't cut corners and we are ate up with providing the absolute BEST waterfowl habitat the Texas Gulf Coast has to offer.

With right at 100 duck ponds, that's right you read it correctly we have right at 100 ponds, we have plenty of ponds to make sure the birds get ample rest!

Farmers call them million dollar rains, we call them migration stoppers! Mother Nature blessed us with some much needed moisture last week and our duck food has exploded!

would like to be on or near the coast just for the added rain that comes in off the coast...but then again, I'm not sure if I could give up mallards lol

Rice harvest is in full swing on a handful of our properties, here are just a couple pictures from one of them. Won't be long and rice rockets will be buzzing around.
