Texas officials propose staggering the opening and closing of the 2015-16 duck season in the state's North and South Duck Zones, opening the South Zone on Oct. 31 and the North Zone on Nov. 7. By adjusting the timing of the "split" in the two-part duck season in each zone, TPWD proposes closing the South Zone duck season on Jan. 24 and allowing the North Zone duck season to run through Jan. 31, the latest date allowed under federal frameworks.
Having more days of duck season in November and December in the South Zone and more during December and January in the North Zone is aimed at improving hunter success and satisfaction, Kraai said. Several years of harvest data indicate waterfowlers in the South Zone have their best success during November and least success during January.
"It's just the opposite in the North Zone," he said. "January is their best month, followed by December. November is the slowest month in the North Zone."
