Hunting Duck in the Rain

Hunting Duck in the Rain - 11/20/14 03:12 PM

This is my first year duck hunting, so I apologize if this is a dumb question.

The weather forecast is calling for a lot of rain this Saturday. How is duck hunting in the rain? Worse than usual? Better than usual? Doesn't change anything?

Thank you for any help/advice you're willing to share.

Rain will be awesome if it raises the water levels and makes new food sources available. However, I have shot birds in the rain but they typically don't fly nearly as well in heavy rain.

After many seasons and many old timers telling me "This is duck hunting weather" I have come up with my own idea about it. Duck hunting in the rain blows! I don't like it and there is simply no truth in bad weather is better for duck hunting. No truth whatsoever! So I don't do it.

Heavy rain is a waste of time to try and hunt in IMO, light rain seems to be decent enough.

I love cloudy, cold, windy, low clouds, drizzle to hunt ducks. Light snow and freeIng weather is fun too.
Heavy rain. Nopes.

I agree with you, give me a cold bluebird day with a little wind and it's game on.
I still hunt the rain though, once it lets up they usually fly pretty good.
Every time I hear the "duck hunting weather" comment I usually shake my head and say yep because it's usually not a hunter saying it.

+1

Before my brother started duck hunting with me a lot a few of years ago he used to always say that. Now he gets it.

Heavy rain = sucks

Mist or light drizzle = deadly

Low ceiling due to clouds = deadly

I don't like to hunt in the rain but it beats sitting at home.

Spot on, but add some 15-20 mph wind to it
