Joggers at the WMA

Joggers at the WMA - 09/07/14 12:50 PM

Just had a guy jog across a levee in front of me not 10 yards from my dove decoys. Not wearing orange or anything. This is not the first time. I've also had to not shoot twice today because of 2 other joggers. This is ridiculous.

Just let 'em get about 5 yds past you and send a couple shots up in the air....that shoud get their attention!

Maybe they don't realize dove season has opened, maybe they feel since they jog there all year long so it is your duty to watch out for them. Just asking??

There's probably a few joggers telling a similar story. "Man...I've been jogging there for 6 months and today there were guys out there with shotguns and toy birds. WTH?"

This same thing happened last year. I'm not saying they can't or shouldn't run there. It's their right if they bought a permit, but they need to be wearing orange AT LEAST. The guy this morning came up on me out of nowhere. There were at least 8 joggers that came through this morning.

Are you worried you are going to mistake a grown human for a dove? We all have to share public places, like it or not.

Ha! I bet there is a Texas Joggers Forum out there where some guy has started a thread with that exact complaint.

So then you just think that no one else should be able to use the land you are using to hunt?

I think that they should follow rules. You need to read the posts above.

Is it the rule to wear orange there? Do the dove hunters have to wear orange?

Re: Joggers at the WMA - 09/08/14 02:26 AM

Everyone must wear orange unless hunting migratory game birds

Migratory bird hunters are exempt from wearing hunter orange while hunting on WMAs. Non hunters are not exempt.

Agreed, but what does you having to not shoot twice because they ran where you were hunting have to do with them wearing orange?

If I hadn't seen them, they could've been peppered? It would've helped both of us for them to be more visible, especially while in constant motion.

Don't see any complaints.

Makes sense.

Has the rule changed? I understood that only hunters must wear orange, and non-hunters do not need a permit.

The rules haven't changed. For as long as I can remember non-hunters must have a limited use permit and they must still abide by the hunter orange laws on WMAs. Only people exempt from hunter orange on WMAs are persons hunting migratory birds or turkey.

It sucks to hear the joggers have taken over down there. When I was in college we were out there at least once a week probably year round doing some type of hunting or scouting and I never came across any joggers.

The important question is...did they chase up any birds for you?
