16 gauge

16 gauge - 09/01/14 04:28 AM

Just to satisfy my curiosity, who is shooting a 16 gauge at dove this year. I'll give it a start. I will be using the 16ga at everything but big ducks.

Yes they do! I love the 16ga for shooting birds. I reload like crazy to get max efficiency out of mine.

I'll have my classic model 37 Ithaca it is an old classic. I mainly break it out for quail but this year it's getting a little bit of dove action as well

Re: 16 gauge - 09/01/14 05:53 PM

I carried a 16 for about 20 years, then somewhere I think in the late 80's shell prices went through the friggin' ceiling and I went to a 12. No one I hunted with carried a 16 either, and it was just more convenient to carry a 20 or a 12. Easier to borrow/loan ammo if needed. I do like 16g, though.

I have two wingmasters, a Stevens 311 SxS, and a Browning BPS all 16s. Ilike them all. Just need to find some birds.

I have hunted with 16 gauge Wingmaster off and on for the past 40 yrs. My favorite for doves and teal.

all I use for doves....As far as shells..Look after the season and load up..I generally find Remington or Fiocchi 16 ga cheaper than the 12s in Feb and March..Esp on line...

I still borrow my dads occasionally. For nostalgic reasons. Never feels inadequate.

Re: 16 gauge - 09/02/14 10:39 AM

I used one for big ducks last year with one ounce of Bismuth 4s that a had bought years ago. Serious medicine.

I've been shooting for Dove and pheasants for a few years.

It is amazing the comments you get from folks at the range when those little purple federal hulls start hitting the ground. Grown men get misty and start telling you of hunting with their father and grandfather.

The 16 is the sweet spot for feathered game. Sure a 3" 20 will stuff more down the bore, but the balance of those old 16s are something special.

1956 Ithaca 37, nothing else like it.

Re: 16 gauge - 09/02/14 12:56 PM

Carries like a 20 and hits like a 12. I have an auto 5 Browning in 16 and my dad has an 870 wingmaster he got for his 12th birthday. He put an improved cylinder barrel with a vent rib on it many years ago. I used it yesterday to limit out before everybody else. One thing for sure though, when I run out of ammo nobody has any I can borrow.

X2. I found 10 cases at $40/case a few years ago. My 1100 16 ga is my #1 dove gun.

I have two Citori 16's I'll be warming up soon. Had the 20 out last night with a limit. If anyone needs a reloader I am fixing to put my Mec 9000 16ga progressive up for sale.

I used my Wingmaster in 16g yesterday afternoon. I love the firepower without much recoil. I just wish the ammo was less expensive and easier to find.

Yup it only takes a minute for the older generation to spot a 16, and then if you show some patience with them you will be entertained for hours about the "old days". My Sweet Sixteen is a dream to carry and all but points itself.

Shot my 16 auto 5 in the morning and my 625 with 28 gauge tubes in the afternoon. What are good 16 gauge shells to buy for reloading?

Is there a chance any you guys that dont reload would have any old 16 hulls I have a press and plenty of wads but no hulls. If fo pm me i would like to get enough to shoot. I have an old A-5 it is a Dove slayer haha.

Re: 16 gauge - 09/03/14 12:27 AM

I have a Browning A5 and bought the invector barrel so I would have the interchangable chokes. Like most people I quit using it when the shells got hard to find and to expensive. But if I could it would be the only thing I would hunt dove with. Love the gun and gauge.

Got a limit today with a remington 58 sportsman, I shoot it better than any other gun I own.

Re: 16 gauge - 09/03/14 02:26 AM

Quick limit of whitewings with the 16 ga 1100 this eve. It says mod on the barrel but it'll out shoot most turkey chokes.

My A5 16 is the same. Thinking of having it opened up

Re: 16 gauge - 09/03/14 11:49 AM

FYI guys! If you are shooting an older gun the choke designation will not be accurate with our new modern shell components. They were designed for paper shells and fiber wads. The latter being the key. With the new plastic wad shot cups MOST older guns will shoot 1/2 to 1 choke tighter than marked on the barrel. It is so refreshing to see so many on the forum still toting the "16".

I've had best luck with black Remington hulls

Herters 16ga shells on sale $64.99/case from Cabelas.

Re: 16 gauge - 09/03/14 07:21 PM

Almost any 16ga shell can be reloaded. My pouch has all different colors. You may have to put a cheerio or a bit of rice in the shot cup to get a good crimp with some loads. Some of my hulls are stamped 'Sears".
If you can, get a lot of the same hull at the same time. Then you will not end up like me. When I load I sort, and when I change hull I must check the notes. Change primer, sometimes powder, weigh the charge because not worth the bother messing with a charge bar for 8 shells, check notes and add 1 1/2 cheerios before the shot.

Re: 16 gauge - 09/03/14 07:49 PM

So they stayed crimped? I've reloaded some cheap winchesters and they all came un crimped

Re: 16 gauge - 09/03/14 08:15 PM

I always shoot my 16 gauge 1100 for dove season. I wish Remington still made the 1100 in the 16 gauge and when they came out with it in the late 90's or early 2000...can't recall the exact year... but I picked one up and wish I would have bought 2. They rarely surface on gunbroker with the rem choke system and gold trigger.

McBride's in Austin always stocks cases of 16 gauge shells and I pick up a couple of cases there before the season kicks off. Got tired of trying to order them online at cheaperthandirt or ammo2go

Re: 16 gauge - 09/03/14 11:00 PM

If they uncrimp, empty out about 10 #8 shot and crimp again.

Been on the look out for a decent 16 ga double for a couple of years and haven't found one at what I consider a reasonable price. Guess I might have to expand my definition of reasonable. If anybody has one they're looking to part with let me know.

+1000 on those black hull Remington they just plain smoke um. Took my old 37 out for a spin today and it spit out those black cases and dropped birds. for those that have not been privileged to shoot a model 37 Ithaca it is one of the lightest best shooting guns I have ever used and it's been in the family for a couple of generations. Mine is from the old plant in Ithaca and is as well built as they come.

I have 1000+ AA 16 ga hulls(discontinued). I can get around 10 reloads per hull. This is one of the more reliable sources for 16ga components http://www.ballisticproducts.com/

+1 on the CZ. Sounds like just what you're looking for. You should be able to find one used for $625-$800 all day. Take a set of snap caps and check the triggers (some of the early ones had really stiff triggers). At about 6.5lbs, they aren't super heavy nor super light. Fixed choke IC/M, double trigger, straight stock, case hardening, hand checkering. The only negative I could find (if you could call it that) was that the barrels are black chromed instead of blued. I actually don't mind that as they are well done, and seem to hold up better in adverse conditions than bluing. In addition to the triggers, there was some rumblings online of people that had patterning issues, but the warranty/service on these guns seems to be outstanding and most just received a new gun as a result. They aren't a $5k Merkel, but they dont pretent to be either. I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up if you find one. Also may want to check out Dickinson Arms if you have just a little more money to spend. Heck of a lot more gun for just a little more $, and still priced light years below comparable guns. I just picked one up in 20ga.

Re: 16 gauge - 09/07/14 05:10 PM

I have been hunting this year with the guns given to me as a kid by my dad. #1 is an H&R topper 16 and #2 is a 1947 unmarked sweet 16. Havent really dove hunted in at least 10-12 years. Was nice to drag the ole A5 out and it run flawlessly through 4 boxes without a hitch. Didn't hit as much as I used to though.
