Another Adventure - 11/12/12 08:00 PM

Well some of you know I can't go hunting without getting stuck somehow at least once a season. I got my 'stuck' out of the way early this yearhammer

So me and my buddy Michael went to scout yesterday afternoon. We were just gonna stay out there all night and hunt this morning, so we went ahead and threw out the decoys and everything(big "no no" to some on public waters I know. but this spot is deep in the sticks and it was a sunday night). Saw a few birds right at dark, but I had mixed emotions for today's hunt.

Last night we get ready to head into town for a bite to eat and realized we left the guns in our blinds, and I didn't want to leave $3k sitting there. Well the lake is pretty low and I thought I could drive my truck almost all the way down to where we were to get them. NOT...

So I called up ol' Mr. Reliable Garrett to see what he's up to. Luckily him and Dave were on their way back from their lease and were actually only about 20 minutes from where I was. So thanks again to those guys. I got out pretty easily.

I hadn't been to this spot since like july, so the only scouting we got was sunday. Of which I think we saw maybe 20 birds. As the front was rolling in through the night we could hear migrating specks and cranes, so I was thinking there had to be some ducks too. At lst the teal were dumping in on us, but our shooting wasn't ready most of the time. Then the big ducks started working with a few green tops to boot...

This one was a bull the other 2 still had quite a bit of brown on 'em.

Re: Another Adventure - 11/12/12 08:18 PM

I was dead tired from a long weekend at duck camp and all the things that take place at duck camp. I'm less than an hour from home when the phone rings...

I looked at Dave and said "it just wouldnt be duck season if we didnt have to pull brett out of the mud" rofl

The mallard second from the left is actually a hen. Sometimes they lose their estrogen as they age and get some Drake like plumage. Notice the hen bill.

Nice shoot!

you're right. I forgot about that, and didn't even notice honestly. That could be tricky if one were to get a limit of mallards, and already had their 2 hens...

That would be tricky. I dare not jump off into that conversation though. We could hit a record 30 pages. That was a good catch duckiller.

Very nice hunt. Say hi to Mike for me.

Garrett has now done his good deed for the year. I was a little worried as it was getting a kinda late, but hey, he did it.

Getting your truck stuck was direct result of leaving your decoys on public waters unattended. Your transgression was duly noted by the Duck Gods and a penalty levied. Mother Teresa (of Waterfowling) saw fit to intervene on your behalf. Your good fortune on the next morning hunt proves only that the Duck Gods are a benvolent bunch and should not be construed as an endorsement of your top water methods. Hopefully you have learned your lesson.

When I was a kid my dad used to tell me "Boy, I swear you could %^&* up an anvel". How in the world did yall mess up a reciever hitch? So let's hear the rest of the story.

Re: Another Adventure - 11/13/12 02:23 PM

we wrapped the chain around each of our receiver hitches. It took a pretty good tug, and when Dave tugged it it bent his hitch a little downwards somehow.

Actually I was looking at them and wanted one because I've already had the other 2 brands. I wanted to a least give it a shot. But I got a hell of a deal on this. It helps when you're girlfriend's uncle is the GM of a dealership.

haha laugh

That chain was stout but what is it with you guys with the big chains, little hooks? It was pretty much our only option wink

Anyway the hitch thing isn't broke, but since it's bent now it might eventually develop a stress crack since the weight of a trailer will be pulling along the short axis of the metal instead of the long axis.

It's one of those things where it works fine now but maybe worth getting ahead of the curve on .
