Keep in mind you will probably just be in a t shirt. During duck season you would have more padding. Also you very well migh shoot more rounds. You might not be hunting the next day. I ahve seen times when high brass 2-3/4 might be good but 3-1/2 is overkill for sure.

Re: Question: 3 1/2 Shells for dove - 08/31/12 11:31 PM

grin I actually keep a box of 3" #6s in the truck... mostly for screwing with folks that say "you can't kill 'em that when they're that high". I never break them out when hunting alone. Slip in that full, lead them about 6' - 7', and blast away.

Now I'll admit those loads are not fun to shoot, but the look on the face of the non-believers is worth the pain.

Re: Question: 3 1/2 Shells for dove - 08/25/13 06:49 PM

Just remember using #4 shot you get less bb's per shell,
so your kill zone is smaller, not sure what choke your using,
but try a full or tighter choke on your hunts. Will give you
some better range, after many years of hunting I just wave at
those high flyers!
Still like the tank or pond hunting just prior to dark!

No clear resolution yet, probably need several more pre-hunting season bumps and 20 more pages to close on a final answer for HOF.

On another note, found this old picture of HOF on his first dove hunt.

Cliff notes please. Do I need the 3.5 inch or not?

No clear resolution yet, probably need several more pre-hunting season bumps and 20 more pages to close on a final answer for HOF.

On another note, found this old picture of HOF on his first dove hunt.

3 1/2s are so early 2000s.... my preferred set up is a full bag of corn in one giant pile about 50 yards away from my 1 1/2 gauge punt gun. I will need help in spreading out the limit or maybe I should just host a bbq over lunch so I can get 2 shots in that first day.

go ahead and waste your money. You wont have worry about cleaning them. There will be nothing left to eat. Also buy a good shoulder pad. Hunting doves in a t shirt is a lot different thdn what you would normally wear hunting ducks or geese.

Re: Question: 3 1/2 Shells for dove - 08/28/21 03:49 PM

This is too funny. Assumed it was a joke for the ammo shortage until I noticed the length of the thread.

Standard game loads, #6 lead, is hitting just as hard as the 1700 FPS steel #4 out past 40 yards and with probably a better pattern. Shot does crazy things when you push it past 1400 FPS, they zing and zig zag and ricochet off each other in there which creates gaps. Can overcome it somewhat with larger shot but that’s less pattern density.

If you want to hit doves at extended ranges shoot some high velocity #4 lead in a full choke. I bust squirrels at distances I should probably never have tried with my mossberg 835 and Remingtons high velocity green shells, #4 shot.

Re: Question: 3 1/2 Shells for dove - 08/28/21 03:51 PM

Oh yeah, and with the standard game loads (Remington black shells) you can afford to miss three to one vs those hypersonic blown pattern shells.

You can kill a dove with IC choke 70 yards with 1oz 7.5 loads. 12 or 20GA. This thread is extremely ignorant…..I hope it’s strictly for entertainment

Real hunters don’t shoot steel at anything. Do the math. Tungsten (heavy shot same) or Bismuth (second) ethical kills, more birds in bag, less crippled birds. You shoot half as much. If your not killing at least 50% of shots over a season/ over decoys- take a shooting lesson- it’s not the arrow…….

Got off subject, talking dove. 1oz 7.5 will kill anything. 1 1/8 silver bullets too much recoil- not necessary.
