What do you use? What did you used to use? I used a single shot 20 forever. I've heard of guys going after wood ducks with a 410 when they were a teen. I now use a pump 12 gauge. How bout you?

Re: Your shotgun - 06/24/12 07:51 PM
Remi 17 as a teen (20 ga pump)
870 12 ga in my early 20s
11-87 12 ga in my mid 20s-mid 30s
A5 magnum in my mid 30s to 40
Had neck surgery, now I'm going the other way.
Mostly either a 16 ga or 20 ga A5 these days. 1oz loads are all I can handle for targets and anything above a 2 3/4 inch 12ga load is stickly forbidden these days. Even for ducks.
Some guys at the club are urging me to join the 28ga crew for a target shooting. Seriously considering that.
Started 410 moss pump
Then 20ga moss bolt
Then berreta 301 20ga
Now go between 20ga browning Citori featherlight and browning 12ga maxus

Started waterfowl with a Remington 1100 12 gauge 29 years ago.
Now a Mossberg 935 for goose and duck.
Teal and Dove with my Dad's old Remington 11-48 20 gauge.

Re: Your shotgun - 06/24/12 08:30 PM
My dad started me out with a bolt action 20ga.
Then upgraded to a NEF 20ga
Then I went through 4 or 5 Rem 870 12ga ( I duck hunted ALOT)
Now I shoot a beretta extrema when I duck hunt and a Yildiz .410 when I dove hunt.
I'll start my kids off with that same bolt action 20ga that my dad gave me.

Re: Your shotgun - 06/24/12 08:38 PM
Started out with a Mossberg 500 that I inherited from my grandpa.
Didn't like some scratches that it was getting so my GF bought me a Benelli Nova for Christmas. Then I bought some Baikal MP-153s and I would mix it up between my Baikal and Nova. Then last Christmas my GF bought me a Browning Maxus.
My GF started with a Stoeger P350 and then went to a Baikal MP-153 that she will use until we get a new A5.
All 12s. And the above pertains to duck hunting and duck hunting only. Add other shotgun hunting and throw a single shot New England Firearms 20 gauge before all of it.

dove gun: 1967 ted williams 20 ga., belonged to my grandfather and was passed down to my dad. my dad gave it to me about 6 years ago after i borrowed it for an evening dove hunt and didn't miss a single shot (only shot 7 birds, but still). killed my 1st deer with it too when I was 12, so it's pretty special to me
duck and turkey gun: remington 870, it's all I need. got it when i was 16, haven't looked back.
I hunted from 1978 till 2008 with the same Browning auto 5 mag twelve. I bought it used for $275. In 2007 I started shooting sporting clays. Tried an O/U. I was hooked on the O/U. Sold every gun I have and stocked up on Browning two barrel guns.

Started with a single shot 410. Shot my first deer, dove, squirrel, rabbit and pretty much every other little critter with it. Got a Mossberg 20 ga to start goose hunting with when I was 12 or 13 and used it for waterfowling for a while. Now I shoot a stoeger 2000.

77-80 410 pump
81-85 Win mod 50 auto 12
85-94 S&W 1000 mag auto 12 with the 28" and 32" barrel
94 to current Browning A5, Beretta Pintail & Silver Mallard, Win SX2 & SX3

Re: Your shotgun - 06/24/12 11:23 PM
Started with a 12ga 870 Express Mag at 12. Used that until about 5 years ago when I picked up a Mossberg 935 for waterfowl. Love both of them. Using a 12ga Wingmaster 870 for dove or a 20ga Winchester depending on the mood.

Re: Your shotgun - 06/24/12 11:27 PM
I also vote for a citori. I love it, it is the most fun to shoot of any firearm ever. When I get tired of sending my maxus to browning to fix (twice already) I'll probably buy another citori for duck hunting. It looks like Browning will get my money one way or another.

Re: Your shotgun - 06/25/12 01:11 AM
Started with a 20guage 870 wingmaster as a kid, went to a 12 gauge 870 in high school. Early 20's went with a 20 gauge Remington 1100, have since went to a berretta 390 (12 gauge), now have Vinci. I have also used a Browning A5 (20 & 16 gauges). Sometimes use an o/u, have an Ithica 20 gauge and an older 12 gauge Browning. I have kept them all except that first 20 gauge wingmaster, I wish I knew where it was...

I started with a 20 gauge 870 wingmaster. Once I was big enough I was given an 870 Express magnum in 12. It's had a facelift since, but it's still my primary water fowling piece.
Started with a TRISTAR 20 ga till it broke(need to get it fixed)
Now I use a Yildiz A71 professional 12 ga

Re: Your shotgun - 06/25/12 05:29 AM
Iver Johnson .410 single shot to start.
Graduated to Ted Williams 20ga pump
Eventually went to Maroccini 20ga O/U
Then Mossberg 835 pump
Now Franchi I-12 semi auto
Still have the Iver Johnson, Maroccini, and Franchi. Ted Williams broke and could not be fixed (reasonable price).
Only one I wish I had NEVER even owned was the 835- biggest piece of crap ever made IMHO
.20 over/under Beretta - started on a pawn shop .410 double barrel

Re: Your shotgun - 06/25/12 01:58 PM
Started on a Winchester 12
Got a Mossberg 500 that I quickly got rid of (had nothing but trouble with it)
Replaced it with a Rem 870
Added an 11/87, but got rid of it for a Benelli Montefeltro
Now shoot O/U and SXS guns almost exclusively (Beretta, Brownnig, SKB)

Saiga-12, 12ga, 24"bbl. Converted and added muzzle brake/polychoke,skeleton stock with a thick limbsaver pad. Guys who shot it saying it has almost no recoil comparing to regular semi auto shotguns. (I would say 30-40% of regular shotgun recoil on 3" turkey or 3" duck/goose heavy load.
I can go shoot 200 rounds of sporting clays and not hurt at all same or next day. Could do more than 200 but range is closing by that time, as we normally go there after work.
Very happy with my shotty. It is not light weightwise, but not hurting next day is worth it. No teeth shattering recoil comparing to pumps.

And turkey and pheasants and geese and doves and pigs
Gives me a nice workout to carry it around(it IS Heavy), but near total lack of recoil is worth it.
Posted By: #Hayraker
Re: Your shotgun - 06/25/12 04:07 PM
different strokes I reckon
I have shot plenty of AK's though, and they still had recoil. I would think a Saiga 12 still has as much recoil as any other gas semi auto shotgun.

TPWD website:
Legal Shotgun: Shotguns not larger than 10 gauge, fired from the shoulder, and incapable of holding more than three shells (shotguns capable of holding more than three shells must be plugged with a one-piece filler which is incapable of removal without disassembling the gun, so the gun's total capacity does not exceed three shells).
As long as I don't have any high capacity magazines on me, I am good with 2 round magazines.
1 round chambered + 2 in magazine = 3 max allowed.
Or I have 5 round magazines with plug installed, that I cannot remove without tools (allen wrench and pliers), And I don't carry those tools on me.

Lefever and Arms single shot 20 as a youth. The gun was built in 1918. My son learned on it, too. My grandson will be next.
Remington 870 in 12 from age 23 to about 35. It was stolen in a house burglary.
Remington 870 in 20 from age 35 to 53.
Benelli Nova in 12 from 53 to 55, where I am now.

I am not going to deny, it is still has a decent recoil. Just not as bad as regular semi-auto or pump. When you shoot 3" heavy loads it does not have that teeth-shattering-bone-rattling-jab into your shoulder. More like a strong push. So if you miss 1st shot, you can get on target really fast. And if you did not hold stock tight against your shoulder - you are not gonna be sorry next day for your mistakes
Started with a 20 ga mossberg 500. Then Remington 870. Then a Stoeger pump. Then a Franchi I-12. Finally worked my way up to a Benelli Vinci.

Re: Your shotgun - 06/25/12 06:17 PM
My first shotgun was a Savage .410 single shot. It still gets some trigger time. However, when I was 15, my dad gave me his father's Savage/Fox 20 gauge (pictured below). Nothing fancy about this gun at all. This coming dove season will be the 33rd year I have carried it and I see no reason to upgrade. Its pistol grip and forestock are sweat-darkened from days afield. Its finish is no longer perfect for I have hunted hard with it. I challenge you to find a speck of rust though. Each ding and scratch on this shotgun is simply a memory bookmark that helps me recall happy times with good friends.

Re: Your shotgun - 06/25/12 08:08 PM
My Shotguns:
For waterfowl - Stoeger M2000 3" in camo
For dove and pheasant - Beretta 390AL in wood
For deer - Savage 220F topped with a Leupold 3X9 Ultimate slam - accurate up to around 200 yards with a sabot slug.
I learned to shoot a shotgun when I was about 10 and learned on a Stevens single shot 20. I think I had a better hit ratio with that gun than any other that I have owned since. When you have to mow 5 yards to make enough money to buy one box of shells, you tend to make them count!!!

Benelli Supernova 12 gauge, Winchester Model 1300 in 20 gauge, and a New England Firearms .410 single shot. The Supernova is the only one that gets used on a regular basis and I love it. I love the recoil reducing stock which is why I went with it over the regular Nova.

It is quite handfull.
Base is about 8#, plus aluminum forearm instead of oem plastic, plus new skeleton adjustable stock, plus polychoke. plus other bells and whistles. I would say it is pushing 10-11 pounds. Plus ammo. It is a workout to lug it around full day of a dove or pheasant hunt. But I like my gun. Like lack of felt recoil. Can shoot 200-300 bird shots and not feel sorry next day.

Beretta Xtrema2 - Dove & Duck
Remington/Browning A5 20ga from 1941
My first shotgun was a single shot 20ga. I used it to teach my daughter on. Now she has a Browning BPS pump in 20 gauge.
If I was getting a new gun today it would probably be a Beretta Extreme. It has a few improvements on my Xtrema and is lighter.
I hope to be handed down my father's 1965 Browning Lightning Superposed one day.
BTW, I'm of Belgian descent and love my Belgian made guns, but I really like my Italian made guns too.

First one was H&R single shot 12 ga.
When I was fully grown, I graduated to a Browning Light A5.
Then on to gas operated a few years after that with a Beretta 390. (I still own that one and though I don't shoot a 12 often, I still like that gun).
Since then, I've owned many.
The guns I shoot most nowadays are a Beretta White Wing in 20 ga. for dove and pheasant and a CZ 28 ga. for quail.
it's all good....
