Opinions for new waders

I'm looking to get a new pair of waders...seems the fat man forgot something...and I wanted to get some opinions. I am looking at either Cabela's or Mack's Prairie Wing. I like Cabelas b/c it is close to me and they have a pretty good return policy. I like the MPW waders becuase of their functional design...but I can't try em on first and they are not local. I may also consider LaCrosse but have heard that the felt lineing is usually the culpret in leaking seams because it mixes with glue and doesnt allow for a good seal.

Anyway, with all that aside, my main question is whether to get 5mm waders with 1600g/1200g boots or 3.5mm waders with 1000g/800g boots. I dont have another pair of lighter waders for early season yet, so that is my only concern about getting the heavy duty waders. Right now heavy pairs would be fine.

Your thoughts?

drake equader mst. all the way function is great. great pocket places. built in fleece hand warmer. cant beat them. had mine for 4 seasons and will never own a different type. spend the money and get them.

Cabela's Dry Plus breathable for me.
Versatile enough for early and late season.

I just tore my old pair of waders tuesday which were some $79 Magellan's from Academy (3.5mm and 400g) that lasted me 5 years. I ordered the cabelas light mag 800 waders to replace them. They are on sale for $144 and there is a discount of $20 off of a purchase of $150 so you could add a box of shells or something to your purchase. I hunt in LA where it's hardly ever cold so I always get the 3.5mm. The 3.5mm is comfortable during the warmer days and plenty warm on days when it's in the teens. The money I spent on the ones I just ordered is about my max price when it comes to waders. The prices of those things are getting out of hand.

With the breathable waders do your feet get cold? I just looked and they are 600g boots, correct? My feet have been getting cold here lately, but i have real light boots on my cheapo brown BPS 3mm waders that I have been using.

Never had a problem. Thick wool socks on those cold weather days and you should be OK.

I might have a pair of neoprenes you could have what size are you?Ive got 5 pair of em.Ill never use em all seeing how im 43 and my buddies are starting to get wimpy and not go hunting anymore.They usually use em.Im in Irving pm me if your interested.

How do these waders hold up when it comes to snagging on stuff and not ripping holes?

When standing in cold water how much do you have to wear to be warm? I have a old pair of green breathable waders for fishing in warmer weather, and I know I really can feel the water temps thru them.

I own two pair of dry plus, when it is really cold, 20's or below i wear the dry plus revolution fleece pants at 150 grams, other than that from teal season on i just increase the thickness of the long underwear i have light fleece running pants that i wore most of december. whatever your choice purchase cabelas, i have returned 3 pair of dry plus in the last few years only to receive another pair for the price of shipping the old pair off.

For north texas, don't get anything more than 3.5mm. I've got 5mm Macks and going to get something else. The 5MM are great. But they're just too warm for our weather.

i have these waders and they are going on their second season of hunting two to 3 times a week every week since the opener of the first split. They have not leaked yet and i have walked through some brush with them. I try and take care of them, but its inevitable that i have to go through some brush with them. They have a second layer from the knee down that takes the abuse and protects the waterproof layer from abrasions.

I have a pair of these expedition weight fleece pants that I use for climbing and mountaineering and they work great under my waders. If its cold i will wear a thin layer of poly pro thermal underwear with these fleece pants, and then the waders, and I cannot feel the cold water at all. I have used them in cold wyoming and montana streams in the spring while flyfishing and they keep me warm.

Now you can probably find some cheaper fleece pants on the market that will keep you warm under waders. I only use these because i have them and would not use anything less in the mountains in the winter. But they do last. For a long long time. Mine are going on 10 years old with heavy use and they still look great.
