Barney moments - 07/25/11 03:23 PM

I got a PM from ducknbass and for some reason that made me think of barneys...

what are some of your barney moments? everyone has had a few, and if they say they have not then they are a lair and take themselves a little to serious clap

the ones that really stick out for me is running my boat right through a decoy spread (or 3). Every time it was on accident and I never even saw them until it was to late.

nothing like busting through some cat tails at 25mph and running right over some decoys nuts

I have one, not on public land, but a friend of mine were out trying to pass shoot some geese on their family friends property...we were about 15yrs old I bet. Anyway, his dad basically drove us out there and sat in the truck. We walked around a bit and as we were headed in there was a group of about 10 geese that were getting lower and lower as they came toward us...we hunckered down and as they came over us, we unloaded scaring the hell of them and of course not dropping any. Well, little did I know(at least I don't remember noticing til then) there was a group of guys a couple hundred yards away in a differnt field on the same property with a huge spread out and sure as [censored] those birds were probably going straight for them. Needless to say, my buddies dad made his son walk over the way over to the guys and appologize for screwing up their decoying birds. We weren't out there to sky bust, we just didn't know those other guys were out there.

I had what I call a rookie moment last season, crossing a creek to retrieve a woodduck, I went across a log jam. Looked nice and solid. With about 40 years of chasing woodducks on a creek, I thought I was safe. Well, hit a rotten log, found a nice catfishing hole on the creek though! Got the duck, said a few choice words about leaving my retriever at home on this hunt. Young lab. Like I said, rookie moment. By the way, mount that woodduck on the wall with a few other woodies I got on that limb. My daughter killed the duck. Proud moment!

Last year on the first day of big duck season I went out with my duck buddy who was breakin in a pup so I got to do all the shootin. After an hour of zero working birds, we had 3 sprigs make one circle and start dropping in the decoys. His place so he says take em and I blow the first shot at 25 yards, followed quickly by a second miss at less than 20 yards. By the 3rd shot they were turning away and I took my time to make it count, afterall we don't get many sprigs and it was going to be the pups first duck. Lined him up and missed again. My bud looked at me like I was an idiot but the look his dog gave me was worse. We started throwing bumpers after that...

About 15 years ago, I decided to walk in to a spot I have never hunted before. I get there around 4am and it is wicked foggy. I get loaded up and head out to my spot, after walking an hour and still have not found the water line, I knew I was lost. I eventually found a fence line a followed it straight to the lake. When I get to the lake, I still have no idea where I'm at. I sat for awhile until the sun came up, figured out where I was, put the dekes out, shot three green wings and headed home. When I get home, I notice a sore on my azz where a decoy had been rubbing during the 2.5 hour walk in the fog. hammer hammer hammer

Re: Barney moments - 07/26/11 06:32 PM

It seems like I have at least one "Barney Moment" every season.

Last yr. I had 3 in the boat late season trying to find a bayou leading off the intracoastal on a foggy morning. The q-bean lost juice and had to find my way by cap lights. After 30 minutes of guessing and hoping the fog would lift soon, I pulled up into the wrong canal. Got stuck in the deep mud. Went around the point with about 20 ft. of visability then guessed that I had gone too far after awhile. Then came back and got stuck in the same spot!

Finally made it to our hunting area with 2 buddies waiting on us 30 min. after shooting time. They were done already and laughed at us for wearing the "extra mud camo". We only saw 2 small groups in the distance the rest of the morning.

Barney Lesson...have a back-up light.

couple of seasons ago I had 2 other guys in my boat and had to weave through a field of dead trees in the middle of the lake. Of course the light goes out and we spent the next hour bouncing off trees trying to make our way with head lamps...I feel your pain

Re: Barney moments - 07/26/11 07:12 PM

Opening morning last year had carb issues(on my freshly serviced motor.) Ended up going to the first spot I had scouted and set up right on top of a guy 20 minutes before legal. Never saw him until right at legal. Felt like a real dbag.

As far as lights go, I carry two q beams at all times. First one goes out and the backup failed on one of the foggiest mornings Id been on a boat. Couldnt find my spot for the life of me. After it was all said and done I missed my cut by 20 yds and shooting one mallard all morning.

Re: Barney moments - 07/26/11 07:35 PM

2009 opener of teal season I guided a group of 6 guys. They were a group of college buddies that get together every year for an opening weekend teal hunt.On the last day of the hunt they asked me if I would be shooting also (since I normally do not hunt when I guide) I told them I would if it is ok with everyone. We made it to the rice field well before shooting time, after being set up and waiting on LST I noticed one hunter had a box of remington heavy dove loads in his bag. I quickly asked him about it before he noticed.. They booked a dove hunt that weekend as well as a teal hunt. He grabbed the wrong shell bag . After having someone come and pick the lead shot up from the field (Gw's would have hung him up for even having it with him) I gave him my shells and ended up sitting the morning out after he shot 2 boxes of shells ending up with 3 teal.

Opening morning of the very first season I ever hunted....two guys in a mud boat get stuck with in about 5 yards of my spread......had to wade out and help them get off a log....
That same morning I shoot a woody hen and it hits the water like a brick. Me and my first dog Miley set out after it only to have it dive on us. We look for a while and nothing so we go back to our make shift blind and in about 5 minutes I see it pop up and gingerly fly off, only to get smoked by some guys on the other side of the island we were hunting next to..........
Since this past season I have all but sworn off hunting on Saturday mornings on the Barney. Walked into a Barney convention one time to many......I'll either hunt private land or stay at home opening morning.......

rofl That is freaking hilarious.

We had a similar Barney Saturday experience. We were hunting a popular spot and were working a group of pintails. After the third appoach, we hear another group of hunters working the same birds right behind us, where the hell did they come from? After circling the fourth time, we hear bam, bam, bam and two pintails hit the water right next to our spread. They politely walked over picked up their birds and went back to huting. My buddy and I were like WTF. They actaully left their spread and pass shot the birds working our dekes. My buddy decided he had enough, he reminded me of the golf course scene in Sideways. We never heard from them again.

Re: Barney moments - 07/28/11 11:31 AM

My moment came years ago......me and a co-worker head out to one of my spots. Get the blocks set out, blind built, boat hid and whatnot. I sit down in my chair take my gun out of the case get my calls out and light up a smoke.....that's when the "moment" started. My co-worker who has been bragging for weeks about shooting all kinds of ducks left his gun in the back of my truck!! So here I go back to the truck in some pea soup fog and drizzle. Some how I get turned around in the dark and end up driveing my boat into a spread.....its still dark out....I apologize to the Guy wearing a head lamp on the bank and ask him what direction the boat ramp was.....it was my co-worker!!! I made it back to the truck and got his gun and made it back to the blind before lst. We had one of the best mornings ever and got a two man limit that day!

Must have happened two years in a row then because I think I remember that from last year too.

Hunting with the BIL and we are running a little late i threw my gear in his truck and we head to the dock. get out to put my waders on only to find i left them in my truck. and i wear sandals till i put the waders on. that was one crappy walk in and a cold hunt for sure. but i'm not going to ruin everyone elses hunt just because i messed up.

What does this mean? I don't think it's possible to 'resemble' a remark. You can resent a remark, but I don't think you can look like or have something in common with a remark.

Oh lord. Not the urban dictionary roflmao

I think I saw that phrase used one other time on this board and I had no idea what it meant. I guess I need to reference the urban dictionary a little more and put ole Webster down. Carry on.
