When I first started duck hunting 2003 I bought from academy 2 dozen cheap mallard decoys + a dozen cheap teal decoys, and I still hunt them today. I had a neighbor give me about 4 dozen Flambeau decoys he bought in the 80’s, and I have bought 3 dozen inflatable’s for walk-in. I never have bought nice decoys, I plan to this year, but I have been saying that for years now
.
But really the early morning ducks don’t care, and that is when you do most your shoot'n. If you scout a place and find a hole holding a lot of ducks, especially late afternoon before the sun goes down, then set up the next morning in that spot and wind direction is right, you are going to be covered up in ducks first 30 minutes of legal and cheap deeks will be as good as any.
But if it is 10:00am, slow blue bird morning, no wind, trying to pull down late season high flying greenheads and pintails, some nice deeks can sure help. Maybe this year I will finally breakdown and get some.
