Perennial Clover Plots?

Have any of you guys tried maintaining a stand of pure clover over several years? I'm thinking about trying to turn one of my small 1/4 acre plots into perennial clover.

Yes. I planted the Imperial Whitetail brand clover and it did very well. They advertise that it lasts 5 years from a single planting and mine lasted 6 years before thinning out. I little pricer than other brands, but I feel that it's worth it.

I had 2 that lasted 4 to 5 years, one did quite well the other never got over very much height as the turkey kept it mowed very close to the ground.

I've planted Alyce clover the last couple of years with my cowpeas. It has not came up well either time, few little patches. The following year a few pieces pop up in the spring, but not much.

WIth that said, not sure the deer aren't getting on it and I never see much of it.

What time of year did you plant?

I planted justin seed fall deer mix with clover this pst year, and the clover came up nicely. I planted it kind of all over and last weekend i noticed some areas that crimson clover was starting to flower, but the plots where there was heavy activity there were sparse to no flowers coming up. I assume its because the deer were keeping the clover pretty low. I know last summer i had one plot thick with clover that did eventually flower....so with heavy deer use you may not get much height and it may not “follow the instructions” as much. Just my 2cents.

In most parts of Texas and Southern Oklahoma, clover comes up in March and by June 1st is so mature, it is not palatable to deer. By July 1st it is dried up. So, you only get about 3 months of food from it. And during that time, mother natures natural groceries are plentiful. If you plant in fall, it barely comes up until spring.

Most would be better off planting Alfalfa plots. They are warm season legume and supply food from March to November/December in my area. I have been mixing clover in my alfalfa plots the last few years and have been getting a little more tonnage of food. Even with it being a perennial plot, I rarely see any clover come up in the fall. Also, the biggest advantage of Alfalfa is it has very long tap roots and can go dormant in a 4 month drought and pop right up with a good rain. Also, you can use the same herbicides/fertilizers on alfalfa and clover.

Yuchi Arrow leaf does real good in North Tx. I will mow it maybe two times in the spring when the rains are plentiful and I still get good seeding for the fall.
