Anyone ever tried planting dried black eyed peas straight from the grocery store shelf?Just thinking about throwing a couple bags out in a disced up food plot .

Put a few in a wet paper towel and keep it moist for a few days. I bet they sprout. If not, cook them up.

I used them for years as a cover crop in my garden. They used to work just fine. But with all the chemicals used these days, who knows? Try 'em and let us know!!

Don't know where you are located but if a dry summer is a possibility, Iron & Clay cowpeas are very drought resistant & if you have a very big plot, might be cheaper to look at 50lb bags.

Or mung beans, they are cheap and drought tolerant as well.

I've had several, get one fix it up and somebody would talk me out of it .I know some folks say they are not safe but I don't drive fast and usually just use it to haul game out or dragging over the food plot after planting.

a bit late to this thread ... there used to be a local feed store that mixed their own deer food plot blend for our area that I would buy for my plots. One year he was out of his mix and said he was out of peas to make up another batch. He told me to go to HEB and buy a few bags of blackeye peas and give them a try along with the feed oats I picked up. I picked up several bags of peas and planted across one end of my plot area to test. They came up great but the deer kept them nipped off as they came up. My feed store has since closed (last fall) and I will be using blackeyed peas going forward.
