Which protein feed

Which protein feed - 12/04/18 08:36 PM

Putting a protein feeder up come January on our place. We always had corn and have some quality deer on camera this year and would like to give them a little help for next season. What protein have you noticed works best for the price? Putting up a 600 pound protein feeder and don't want them eating me to bankruptcy! haha

Lyssey and Eckel 20% or Purina Antlermax 20%. Take your pick. I'd mix it 50/50 with corn so the deer get used to it. Only put a couple hundred pounds in the first filling. Then go heavier 75% protein and 25% corn on the next filling, again only using 200lbs. Once the deer have taken to the protein, go 100% protein. Fill the feeder according to consumption. If they're not hammering it day and night or, if you get a bunch of rain and a green-up, no need to have 600# of pellets sitting in the feeder for a couple months, untouched.

I agree, Lyssey & Eckel or Purina Antlermax 20%.

Protein feeding is a long term deal, you won't see any drastic change in antler quality / full genetic potential for a few years.
It will help doe & their fawns fairly rapidly.

I wouldn't waste the effort & expense unless you have large well built feeder pens around the protein feeders.

We have one protein feeder at ranch HQ, we put 6,200 lbs in it last year, we stop feeding just before general season & start again Jan 5 - 15.
Depending on population & area you could feed quite a bit more or a little less.

Thank y'all. We have fenced off roughly 1/2 acre with fence that won't allow hogs in. So it will only be deer and raccoons that will have access haha

You are right. The coons can and will hurt you. I can give you the contact info for a few different guys that have reported a group of coons digging out a few hundred lbs of feed in a night.
I really suggest CoonHoods. It’s the only product out there that has solved this issue.

We have used Double Down for 2 years with much success. We saw an immediate improvement in antler mass in just one season.

I've been using antler max for several years now. What I've really noticed is the with weight it has put on the younger deer. Don't be surprised if they don't go to it immediately. I started with mixing corn and protein and they didn't touch it for over a month, then all the sudden I couldn't keep it full. I feed protein year around. They don't touch it much when there is plenty of rain and the vegetation is green around but they hammer it during the late summer hot season and over the winter months. This past summer with the extreme drought they about broke the bank.

If you have hogs they will kill protein too.. We have pics of all 6 ports at one time being occupied by pigs standing on their hind legs...we quickly put up 36 inch hog panels...carpet tack strips to the top pf ports so the coons cant hang or sit and spill out protein

Russel Feed, many DFW locations. Was $12.99 per 50lbs a couple months ago.

I've tried 2 or 3 different brands including ones mentioned above and the only brand the deer I feed ever have eaten is Antlermax. Not sure why, maybe it's the area I hunt (King County) but I've wasted money and feed by looking for an Antlermax alternative.
