1st year feeding protein I have a question???? - 09/14/17 05:29 PM

With the end of the year approaching I can now say that I have been through one full year of feeding Protein!
I have I guess what you would call a free choice feeder which feeds 24 to 7 no timer !
Do you guys feed protein during the month of November and December or do you cut Protien off during those two months and feed only corn which is slung by timer ? If so when do you cut it off mean quit Feeding it and when do you begin feeding it again ?

Thanks

It's left out until they stop eating it. Some years they destroy it others they barely touch it. Depends on the range conditions. I will freshen it up in December and refill as needed.

When the current protein runs out, that will be it until about Feb 1, 2018. I feed protein Feb. to Aug/Sept. We are about to plant 130 acres of wheat on an 835 acre place and start up all the corn feeders. The wheat will give the deer plenty of supplemental food during the fall and winter months.

Usually we feed protein February or so through October and corn year round.

Although they don't eat near as much in Oct-Nov, I feed protein year round.

I feed protein from about March when antlers start to grow through middle of September when velvet comes off, just finished my first full year as well. Next year I may start feeding year round.

Corn is year round, but turn it down in the off season to only 1 second in morning and 1 second in the evening, mainly to keep the deer and hogs around. During season is 3-4 seconds morning and 2 seconds evening.

I feed corn from Oct-Jan and protein year-round. Protein is an important part of deers diet.

If you can afford it, feed it year round. Make sure your fawns can access it as well. That is your future and you want them off to a good start. Good luck.

We would quit feeding protein once the gun season started. But, it doesn't hurt to put out protein in January, when the rut is basically over, to help them get back into shape. That would be the only time I fed a 16% ration, just sustainment. Then it would be back to 18, if not 20%, minimum, depending on what Mother Nature was providing.
