Re: 2023 Hog Count - 01/03/23 03:13 AM

I can't remember who posted a pile of green tips a few mo ago

The friend I took shot a 243 bolt gun and I took my 556 in green tips

I swear they roll on decent sized pigs

I always gave him 1st shot and I then cleaned up the mess, the fmj green tips are salty..this is my 3rd year using them..

You don't get them all but enough they're worth the $$$

That’s the exit I been talking about on decent sized pigs, I’d guess this one near 165-175 lbs

I’ve saw enough now to believe they tumble/ricochet inside the cavity

About 60 yards away last night with a Bergara Ridge 7-08. 150 Berger Classic Hunter bullet. The bullet went through the body and exited in front of the right rear leg.

He weighed 200.5

We only weigh a handful a year

He looked good in the thermals but once we got on him we decided he would be one of the ones weighed

Those boars can fool you, fooled us...we thought 250

Big head and front shoulders but short and thin in the azz, cutters were prob 2.5"

Last year we weighed a 249 and 247...

Thanks for the inspirational support! Mixing bait and organizing traps this weekend. Last year with the drought they mainly moved elsewhere. They're filtering back in now, especially since other's deer feeders have run out. "It's a process." rifle

I like it. The scope is clear but it would be nice to have a larger field of view. The mount is solid and held up to the recoil of 8MM pretty well.

Nephew got these 51 off a ranch in Zavalla County Saturday night and up until about sunup on Easter. Since then he has been plowing on the ranch and has only gotten 4 more. I don't have a picture of the last 4 but I take his word for it!!

Re: 2023 Hog Count - 04/25/23 12:09 AM

Just got back from San Saba where the hogs seem to be as thick as flies in a feedlot. I took out 6 hogs this trip, so adding 6 to Cool Barrel Bill's total of 134, it now stands at

140.

This big one was shot Saturday night between thunderstorms on a neighbor farmer's place. We have his blessings as well as another neighbor's to shoot any hogs we see.

I was not able to get to it until the next day because of excessively soggy fields, and as can be seen the buzzards opened up its gut and some contents are leaking out on the ground. I intended to try and pick this one up, but I'm guessing it weighed right at 200 pounds if not more, and there's just no way I was going to be able to wrestle this one into the Polaris. My nephew showed later and showed me where he stashes the stuff for dragging big critters, but by then this one was being well picked apart.

[Linked Image]

Of the other five, one was about 110 pounds (est.) and the rest were very small. The strangest one of all was shot Friday night while I sat in the blind after dark. The kill light at the feeder turned on and got my attention so I looked with my thermal. I swear I saw a big blob of heat, and I shot a couple of times. The blob moved outside the feeder enclosure and acted confused, or wounded. I fired again and it went down. When I walked down to take a look (pistol in one hand and a powerful light in the other) I thought I was seeing a skunk laying there, but it was an itty-bitty hog, not much bigger than our cat. I might have had the magnification jacked up on my scope...I dunno. My own screwups don't really amaze me, but what did amaze me was this single solitary VERY small hog out there wandering around by itself.

I guess I just haven't seen everything, yet.

Re: 2023 Hog Count - 08/10/23 11:06 AM

Hunted three nights near San Saba beginning Sunday night. One night a sounder of about 20 came in and everyone of them was the same size---little 15- to 20-pounders would be my guess. When they're that small and doing their little piggie dances all over the place, they're hard to hit, and six rounds neted me nothing. I couldn't believe it.

I did get a shot on a lone boar on another night, and made good on that one. I saw no other hogs the entire trip, and I attribute that to the heat and the fallow wheat fields. We sure could use a little rain.

Anyway, bump that count to

Got #240 & #241 on consecutive days this past weekend in broad daylight. Hogs coming round the clock to all my feeders.
Hogs were at each of these feeders again the next morning even though one of the hogs was left in view of the feeder camera to see what came to the carcass. My 30.06 dropped both where they were standing. [Linked Image]

My M98/48 (Yugoslavian captured and refurbished Kar98k) got its chance to shine, knocked down 2 at about 250 yards including one on the run. I was shooting the only full power commercial hunting load we have here, the Sellier & Bellot 196 grain SPCE. There's just something special about shooting hogs with 8x57, which could be said to be the quintessential boar cartridge.
