Another 450 night

Another 450 night - 07/03/21 04:23 PM

Picked the 450 Bushmaster to hunt with last night. I chased two other hogs with no luck. This nice boar came in and gave me a shot. One round of Hornady 250gr FTX ammo and down he went. They don’t tend take a step when they are hit with the 450B. When I walked up to drag him off this porcupine walked out so he got a 450B round also. Sure is fun to hunt with the big bore!

I had a .50 beowulf for a while. Loved hunting pigs with it. Just down and done. No death kick, no running. Just pure lights out.

Used to be that if you saw one your were supposed to kill them, they do great damage to trees. Around the San Angelo area they are especially bothersome.

This is why you kill porcupines. This is a picture of my Border Collie after a porcupine encounter.

I was figuring that was probably the case, but since it was in the back of your cart I was wondering if you were going to skin it, throw some Sweet Baby Rays on it and smoke it up. Most folks just leave them lie where they are.

Everything damages something. So we kill everything?

So I guess we gotta kill every animal that gets the best of our pets when our pets mess with them, LOL.

On my property there IS a 'value system' and while I don't intend to kill every animal at the bottom of that list *all have a place in the ecosystem* anything that poses a threat to my dogs or family WILL be dealt with. There won't be discussion or debate about it.

Yes, there is room for an animal to 'defend itself' and IF the consequences of my dog 'being a dog' and making an error are not too severe....I will allow it to happen.

But there is a high end to what I will allow. And since I am the judge *within the law* of that, I will exercise my stewardship as I see fit. My dogs are NOT going to suffer any grievous injuries or experience life altering lessons because others feel everything has the same right to life. Harsh or not....it will be that way as long as I can draw a breath.

I generally don't but trees are in short supply around San Angelo at least on the property I leased there. I rarely shoot anything other than deer or hogs but the property owner was adamant about taking out the porcupines. I also ran into this in Wyoming when I told a game warden there were a lot of porcupines around and he also told me to kill all I saw. Considering I was on a two week trophy Mulie hunt you can bet I didn't shoot one. I told the game warden where I saw one and he sharpened a stick and killed it with that.

After seeing that I might just start killing every one I see if it doesn't interfere with my other hunting. I find your angle hard to fathom because you kill Beavers and feral hogs for the same reasons.

I guess Double Naught doesn’t run bird dogs.

If my dogs get banged up learning (or not) a lesson in nature, it is what it is. I don't blame the porcupine for survival.
I'm glad no one looked at me that way as a kid, I would not have seen 6 years of age.
I understand wanting to protect the dogs but Double Naught ain't wrong.

No one is 'blaming' the porcupine....or suggesting that every species be summarily killed in every situation. But it is foolish IMO to not use discernment when dealing with animals whose presence can result in severe injury to a prized pet or human. It's actually OK to place greater value on one over the other....and pure folly *if not hypocrisy* to think otherwise. Ultimately WE are given dominion over the animals and expected to be good stewards of such. In the grand scheme of things, variables dictate how that plays out. I.E. (over population, threats to other animals or humans, crop damage, property damage, etc...etc...)

So I find it a bit 'rich' that those who would kill hogs, coyotes, snakes, crows, etc without second thought, suddenly have a problem with killing porcupines when it involves a pet. I agree we should not be 'indiscriminate' which I believe was Brian's point to begin with. There should be good reason for our actions. Of course, that is quite another topic altogether. Each person should simply use their best judgement.
