Any way to guess weight by tracks?

Went bowhunting yesterday and found a set of Hog tracks as big as I have ever seen. Going back this afternoon to do some more scouting instead of wasting my time chasing deer.

Not really. Tracks often appear much larger when made into soft ground and so those tracks will not compare readily with tracks made on hard ground by the same hog.

Depending on the ground, tracks will either be representative of the size of hog or look like a larger hog.

On clean tracks in just the right textured ground these are some big ones. I have always felt hogs had small feet compared to their overall size. I have pretty big hands, an XL welders glove is tight. That said my fist barely covers this hogs hoof not including the two higher up parts. I am going to try for this hog in a serious way this year. I noticed him last year and spent some hours waiting him out to no avail. He will not come near a feeder. Going back out there tomorrow, might take some pictures and post them with a pop can next to them.

I've always had trouble making any sort of accurate assessment of hog size based on the size of the tracks. Heck, I have trouble distinguishing between tracks of small calves and large hogs!

Well this is in farm country north of West, unfenced it is true but I find it pretty easy to tell the difference between a hog track and a calf track. The Dew claws are often easy to discern in a hog track and the calf hoof print is more like a giant more rounded deer track.

Where I hunt it's sandy soil, and usually pretty dry. The prints are seldom distinct, and it's rare (unless really muddy) to see the dew claws leave an impression.
My usual rule is that if I see larger cow tracks, I assume everything is cattle.

Well I got out there at 4am waited for daylight and only saw a rabbit and 4 deer. Went looking around to see if I could find an area with a lot of hog sign. Not much to see right now, the ground is pretty dry and hard where it hasn't been tilled. I did find a spot where it looked like both hogs and deer drink at a Y in the creek so I put a camera up to see what is going on, cut a speed trail so it will be easy to set up a stand next time out. Man I took a hard fall, going down hill my right foot got caught in an old downed fence, had to throw my machete out away from me so I wouldn't fall on it, caught myself just barely keeping from doing a face plant but in doing so really put some pain in my shoulder joints and neck. Two things came to mind, the first is a line from a current football commercial saying it isn't how many times you get knocked down but how many times you get back up. Well I got back up and continued my scouting, the second thing is something I tell others all the time "watch where you put your feet". Time for some bourbon on a couple of ice cubes.
