sidearm bullet choice

sidearm bullet choice - 10/02/20 07:55 PM

I carry an AR with me when I hunt hogs so I have never felt the need to carry my .45 so I am not sure which bullet is best for this. But now I am counting my 6.8 bullets and I cant afford to waste any of them so my plan is to take that final shot up close with my .45 rather than my AR.

I have 3 types of bullets here at home to choose from 1. fmj's 2. hard cast +P 3. self defense hollow points

I am guessing my fmj's should be fine but I have no experience and wanted to hear what others who have done this before think.

thanks guys

Realistically, you aren't stopping any sort of attack with your pistol. You are just putting down wounded hogs. Just about anything will work because you are going to shoot them in the brain. So, FMJ will be fine.

I carry a .22 mag for the purpose.

Yep, I just carry a plain ol' .22 for that purpose.

I might as well ask. I will be scouting the wma in a few weeks and no hunting weapons are allowed but I am going to carry my sidearm since I keep reading that the hogs have no fear of people at this place. That being said I am thinking I will have to stop a charging hog if I have to use it. SO....

Hard cast +P I am guessing. Again what say the experts?

thanks again

<JOKE>
Just carry an AR-15. All the Bloomberg organizations will tell you it's NOT a hunting weapon, it's only purpose is to kill people.

Actually, while I can't speak from personal experience in a WMA, my encounters with hogs have always been that they're trying hard to get away from me. I've never been so fortunate (if that's the right word) as to actually have them come towards me once they learn I'm there. The exceptions to that having been after the shooting started, and the woods where they wanted to hide were behind me. Even then, they weren't trying to attack me, but merely to get to the cover that was in my general direction. If you somehow managed to get between a sow and her piglets, you might have an issue, but I've been there and the sows left the area while the piglets ran in circles not knowing what to do.
