Question

Bought 24 acres in Jack County. Put a corn feeder up last fall and a trail camera. Have photos of the nocturnal deer and a few hogs. Was thinking about putting a solar light at the feeder as I don't have the IR scopes and gear to see in the night. Would a solar light help or hinder the hogs coming to the feeder? Any feedback is appreciated

I used solar landscape lights for years prior to NV/thermal. Never saw any indication whatsoever that the light spooked hogs (or deer).

Only problem I ever had was coons tearing the lights up. Mounted on the top of a stick of EMT wired to a t-post cured that.

I keep solar powered lights at all my feeders, and the animals just seem to ignore the lights. You can just stick a 2x4 or similar in the ground near the feeder and mount a light to it. Takes you about 10 minutes total to get a light up and running, and you can pick up the lights at very good prices.

Thanks. I don't know why but there has not been a problem with coons. Not a single one on camera. I greased the legs on my feeder in anticipation of coon problems. A pesky tree rat visits the camera but that's all

Yeah, if the light bothers the animals, it will only be initially for a few days and then they get used to it, no problem.

down at the creek, twas little darker area, had solar lights in ovel shape around deer feeder & food plot.
Used mill-dot scope over AR & green laser under, had lean stand 20yrds in edge of trees North of lights.
20yrds north of stand had deer feeder & food plot in open paster by an oak tree, didnt need the lights for scope/moon light.

Not solar but I use the D-cell Mr. Beams motion activated lights. It'll go a few months on a set of 3 batterries. I tried solar panels years ago but squirrels ate everything, sounds like you don't have that problem, though. I have the Mr. Beams (no affiliation) light mounted to a tree with an old feeder cage around it. Works great. My sister tried the C-cell lights over her feeders but the C batteries die so quickly she ended up spending more on batteries than me with my D cells. Best of luck to you!

I've used the solar lights from Harbor Freight for several years. They last anywhere from two to five years depending upon how much abuse they get from squirrels, cows, birds, whatever. The hogs get accustomed to them very quickly.

I had a solar charger for my cellular game cameras. They didn't make it a season due to the squirrels and rats eating the wires. I even had most of the wires in conduit, but they still ate through them..........

To your original question: the solar lights will help you as the hunter and won't bother the hogs or deer at all.

From experience, I can say that you need metal conduit and a metal framed solar panel. And lock down the conduit at each end, so it can’t be pulled apart by the weight of a big raccoon. That’s what I finally did, and things have been Ok for a few years.

First I did plastic solar panel and open wiring. Silly me. Next was adding plastic conduit. Silly me. Next was all metal, but not connected strong enough. Next was solid attachment of everything. I won’t say I won, but I am ahead right now.

I am perhaps slightly smarter than the coons, and slightly more determined.
