Bait Testing

A Few times a year while going through normal baiting routines for my hog hunts, I inevitably get bored, and grab something new to try. I always go with old reliable fermented corn, but sometimes I mix up a bucket of something new, or grab a can/bottle of some supposed sow in heat urine, or some such. You get the idea. I believe if there really was some holy grail bait/scent that cause them all to crawl out of the wood works, we'd all be using by now, but it's still fun to play with from time to time.

I find occasionally trying a new bait definitely helps with the monotony of making a batch, and surfing for recipes is more interesting than sitting on my [censored] doing nothing when I can't get out. Anyone else do their own testing, or recipe hunting? Ever find anything interesting that worked better than you thought it would?

I found a thread once saying to try flour. I was pleasantly surprised at how well that worked. Pigs ignored the corn first time around and were all down wind of the flour pile licking at the ground,

Last year we soaked corn in quiet a few different thing beer, apple cider vinegar, liquefied peanut butter etc, and they ate it all. But the combo they always seemed to go to first and fastest was when we mixed big red and tropical punch cool aid only letting it soak for 24 hrs.

Interesting. I've never tried the big red recipe. I've had extremely mixed results with koolaid/jello mixes. Sometime they hit it immediately, sometimes they leave it alone altogether and the deer eat it. I tried a beer one that didn't go over so well. I've heard soaking in soured milk does amazingly well, but it's one of the few smells on the planet that will make me wretch almost instantly.

yea we've done the clean the fridge out soaks too. Bottom line just gotta have the pigs in the area and they'll come to almost anything. We killed probably 55-60 pigs with a few more we knew we hit just never found from Feb 19 until Oct 19 but soon as deer season started they all but vanished. We have only gotten 4 since Oct., all have been single pigs no sounders, even on our game cams the most we have gotten in any pics is 2.

I tested plain corn about 20 years ago and it has been working good ever since. I used to ferment corn in sugar, molasses, whatever was the "best bait". It never worked any better than plain corn.
