Daughter put down more hogs - 12/31/19 01:53 PM
For a girl who just turned 12, she is turning into a real pig killer. She has killed 5 in the last 3-4 weeks. 2 on the first night, one we stalked a week later, and now 2 more down.
Here is how it went down with the last two.
Saturday evening we were out hunting deer, there is a nice buck I am trying to put my daughter on. We were sitting over a small wheat field that has a windmill at one end. That windmill overflows water, and makes a wet muddy streak that goes part way out into the field. About 20-30 minutes before dark a sounder of pigs came out to drink and play in the water. There were 8 adults and 18-20 piglets. I asked her if she wanted to ignore them and wait for the buck, or shoot pigs. She said shoot pigs.
We got all set up and ready. The range was right at 185-190 yards. I told her to take her time and pick the shot she wanted, and after she shot then I would start shooting. She shot, and then I opened up, with the normal chaos following. I heard her shoot a second time with the Grendel but I had my hands full trying to keep myself on target. I shot a dozen times with the 556 and 65 SGK's on some rapid crossing shots going to the right. I could hear about half the bullets hitting, and could see pigs stagger, but nothing was dropping. The only one I dropped inside the wheat field was a little piglet that I smoked right through the shoulders.
Her first sow we found about 50 yards away. She had hit it hard. It was around a 160 lb sow. Her second sow was the big one. It took a 6.5 in the rear end as it was running dead away. That 6.5 dug deep, getting all the way up into the vitals. It made it about 100 yards before going down in the cotton patch next to the field we were in. With a tight tape on that one hearth girth measurement was 39", the chart shows that comes out to a bit over 190 lbs. I believe it, we had to use the winch to get it in the back of the truck. We also found one of mine out in that cotton patch about 300 yards away, still alive. Had to finish that one off. I imagine I killed another one or two but those headed out into the mesquite and tall broomweed, and we couldn't find them.
We all like pictures, so here they are.
