New lease lots of hogs!

New lease lots of hogs! - 10/14/19 12:34 AM

Waited til it finally cooled off and went to the lease north of Woodson to put some feeders up last thursday, did so and noticed a heck of a lot of hog sign in the form of digging up rocks in some tough hard dirt looking for worms or grubs I guess. On the way out in the road around 5PM I see a huge gray hog walking down the side of the road, in broad daylight! Due to a dog mishap I did not get a shot. Today the other two guys on the lease went out to put their feeders up and they saw more than 40 hogs also in broad daylight and neither had a rifle as they were just doing the chore of putting their feeders up. So far I have seen 4 deer and 6 hogs. Hmmmm. Going to have to get on the hog control soon, wednesday will be good.

So I headed out there expecting to stay last night and do some night hunting. I get through the gate and go a hundred yards into the property just to where an empty hog toy was set, thinking I would fill it I walked out there with my 7-08 in hand and planned to look out onto some really nice scenery down on a pond when 50 yards to my right I see three hogs doing the same thing, I am in full view so I turn around and head back behind some brush then peek through it moving around to get a clear shot while mostly being concealed. I see a hog looking under the brush my way but not moving. I put the post of my scope in the middle of the left side of his face and hit him just where I aimed. The bullet struck 2 inches under his ear and as he was quartering to my left it traveled down his neck and broke the far shoulder. Down he went for the curly shuffle. Don't know for sure but I don't think it exited as I couldn't find an exit hole but I did ask the processor to look for it. Hog only weighed an estimated 125 pounds and is in fine shape and I want to make sure it doesn't spoil so I hung it and gutted it. Went and topped off my two feeders, loaded the hog and went back home, total time on lease 45 minutes! Drive time 319 miles round trip. Load used the 140 gr. Partition pushed by 46.0 grains of IMR 4350.

Guess all that activity made the drive home a bit more enjoyable. Good times.

Well my Catahoula dog didn't think being there only 45 minutes was cool at all and I would have liked to spend the night and get a better picture of deer movement. Going back soon though.

We keep a 150qt igloo at camp for situations like this. Ice is available 20 minutes away. If we kill quick we gut and quarter and ice down. Those 300 mile round trips can get tiresome after a while.

We always plan ahead. Take a cooler and ice if you need it you have it, ice is cheap. Compared to making a trip back home or whatever.

Went back out friday and saturday coming back sunday, definitely would not need ice. At any rate saw 2 nice bucks, 4 does and 30 or so feral hogs. Didn't take a shot but got a better idea of deer and hog movement.
