Great Hunt, Despite the Heat

Great Hunt, Despite the Heat - 08/23/19 10:30 PM

Me and ol' Pig Popper had a great hunt last weekend in spite of the heat and the fact that our usual fields were chest high in sorghum. We'd set up on a trail where we had almost 200 yards to watch, with a pig pipe about 80 yards away.

Winds were light from the south/southeast; all we had to do was wait. And wait. We watched raccoons enjoy the corn until at about 11 pm when one of 'em stood up looking to the west. Sure enough, several sows and a bunch of little ones came in. We hit several and waited, and shortly a few came back. Ended up with a sow and bunch of little ones of different ages.

The next night was a lot slower. A sow finally stepped across the trail, some 45 yards away. I hit her with the Grendel and she disappeared. No DRT, no "whump," no nothing. And of course I hurried the shot and didn't hit "record" on the Sightmark. We found her piled up under a cedar about 25 yards away.

She measured 38 inches around, taken behind the front legs, for about 180 pounds. (Right, Chad?) The Ballistic Tip had entered just behind the ribs on the right side, and exited at the jaw on the left. Not the first time I'd had complete penetration with BTs but no indication of a hit.
