Hawken Hog

Hawken Hog - 07/17/19 05:33 PM

So last Sunday I was at a muzzleloading match and ended up buying a TC .50 caliber Hawken from one of the guys. It was an old kit gun that needed a lot of attention, but the bore looked okay. I took it home, disassembled the whole gun and started cleaning up and adjusting stuff. Everything seems to be going okay so far, so I loaded it up with a round ball and took it out with me this morning to the woods. I ended up putting a hole completely through this little sow.

That's real muzzleloading. I love my sidelocks...even though I sold one of them to you. Well done, sir.

Congratulations! I have a T/C Hawkens side lock and flintlock. Both great shooting rifles. What load did you use?

Re: Hawken Hog - 08/05/19 08:30 PM

I just dropped 50 gr. of 3f in it. I have since taken it to the range and with 70 gr. of 3f it is pretty much right on the money.

I’ve always used 90gr. 2F with a 370 gr. Maxi ball in my T/C Hawkens. I’ve killed a lot of deer with that load out o 110 yds. Always had complete pass throughs on shoulder shots. Non of the deer went more than a few steps, most dropped like a rock.
I’d planned on using the same load if I decide to hunt Colorado ML Elk. I sight my rifle into be dead on at 65yds, that puts me about an 1.5 high at 30 yds and 1.5 low at 100. Pretty much a dead on hold anywhere inside 100 yds.

Sounds like you have it together with that Hawken. I've used Maxi balls in some occasionally, and they sure do work good. Now days I have just settled on PRB's and use them in all my muzzleloaders though. I think both are some good hunting bullets...

Man, that sure makes me want to dig my ol' Hawken .54 out of the deep hole in the gun safe! I built that thing from one of the very early T/C Hawken kits way back in the 70s when the barrels still came "in the white". It took a hell of a lot of work, but I was really happy with the end result. Hunted with it for several years until I got the string-and-stick bug. Now that I'm "mature" and have shoulder problems, maybe I need to go back to the smokepole!
