Your experience 7.62x39 on hogs? - 06/06/19 06:02 PM

Just wondering your results with the 7.62x39 on hogs, meaning the medium to large hogs, and really talking about the soft point hunting bullets.

No need to point out all the other better hog calibers...

Thanks.

They should perform just fine. That caliber is not too far off from the Blackout, Grendel, etc...and I can not imagine it not doing a good job.

I've shot a few with a 7.62x39 123 gr soft point. Not always the perfect clean kill I'd like to see. Most of the time they go straight down, but then kick and squeal for a while. Never had one get back up and run. If you have a rifle you like, I think the caliber is just fine.

I have two that are probably going to get a workout on 'em real soon.

Find the right bullets and stay under 120 yards - it'll work great. It packs a lot of punch at closer ranges. Hornady 123 grain SST work pretty well compared to soft points though I've used soft points with success. Just doesn't stop them as well as I'd like.

I shoot an AR 7.62x39 with Pulsar XP38 Trail thermal and it does very well, even out past 125-150. Shot placement is the key for any rifle but I'm cheap and like the low cost of ammo for this gun. I typically use HP but SP are good as well.

I use some of the old Herters brand that comes in 154 grain. Cabelas doesn't carry it anymore. I think Tula is the one that makes it anyway. DRT on a majority I hit well...

I built one from the ground up on an AR platform and it is my favorite of all my "hog collecting" firearms. I load the 123 grain Hornady's and can shoot sub-MOA every time I go out. It puts 'em down, and puts 'em down hard and fast. If I can't get an earhole shot, I've found that neck shots and shoulder shots are very effective, giving me one shot kills every time I put the bullet in the right place.

When pigs started being a problem here about 20 years ago, my youngest son and I averaged 45 pigs a year with SKSs in 7.62x39 using plain ole good smelling Russian MilSurp FMJs.
Have a couple of ARs chambered in that round and was amazed at how accurate the round can be when shot thru a decent barrel.
I agree the 123gr SSTs in 7.62x39 are the bomb but if I'm going to spend time and money to handload, I will stick with 6.8.
With that fact in mind, during daylight hours, the SKSs get MilSurp and after dark the 6.8 with 120gr SSTs get the nod and they both continue to give pigs dirt naps.

Tula with the 8M3 Hollow point is the best load I have tried, works on deer equally as well.

Mine works great on hogs. The pic on the cover of my son and I with the aoudad is with my 7.62x39. It was a 260 yard shot and he only went 40 yards. It's a great caliber.
