Anyone tried to tame a baby pig - 01/31/19 11:37 PM

Thinking about trying it what do you think? I'd really like a pet bobcat but pigs are easier to catch

One of the guys on our lease years ago caught a piglet and gave it to the LO. He had it in the house for a while. A customer of ours, after retirement from the power company, started a right-of-way mowing company. He accidentally mowed over a litter of bobcats except for one. He took that home and kept it as a pet for a year or two. Cool pictures, sleeping on the mantle, etc. 'Cept it would act like Kato in the Pink Panther movies when he came home. It would hide and jump on him. He released it at their farm and it came into a deer blind with his brother and sat for a while one time.

My uncle caught one but it only lived a few days.....was very young....

Same uncle found a baby bobcat and took it home. Kept it for a couple years....became more and more wild over time...

I've heard of a couple folks raising them.....easier to domesticate than a bobcat.... 2cents

Glenn Guess has done it. Another buddy of mine tried it. Some respond better than others to confinement. Repeated and regular handling when they are very young, hand feeding, etc. seems to make a big difference.

I used to have a bunch of youtube videos of my little wild hogs. I deleted all my vids from there but it is easy to raise them. I had one named Chopper and he was mean until he finally gave in and then he would ride around in my truck on the center console and go into the feed store with me. Everyone knew him around here. Funnest little guy to have around. I also caught a brother and sister and raised them, they would irritate me all day while I worked always wanting me to play or feed them but they were fun also.
I also had a wild fox named Kit and he was a crazy little guy. Too obnoxious at night jumping on me and messing with my ears while I tried to sleep but fun to watch and play with.

My grandfather caught 3 baby pigs back when I was 12 or 13 and kept them in a horse stall. When I came back out to the lease 6 months later he thought it'd be funny to let me go in there to "try" to pet them. Well when I went in there they all backed into a corner and before I knew it I was jumping over the little rockets as they charged me happy3 He said they never got use to humans

Gave some baby pigs to my brother in law. After a couple of months he let them out and they stayed around for a couple of weeks then ran off. They would still come around to eat. The next thing you know his pot belly pig has some babies that looked like wild hogs. roflmao

Had 3 little hogs for a while. They were doing fine till some kids in the neighborhood jumped the fence when we were at work one day and speared one. At that point we just butchered them.

Yep my brother did . IT was quite a nice pig til it started rooting up his backyard, then the wife said he has to go. Made a heck of a mess in his backyard in no time.

We caught a couple of little ones years ago. Buddy kept one for a few months and its was easy to handle just stay away from his mouth. Go bigger and like to broke some ribs on wifey's lap dog and had to go. Was gifted to Hispanic man in Tatum for butchering but his daughter fell in love with Porkchop and he had a good life till a pack of dogs settled his bacon.

caught a baby after I ran out of bullets taking out the family. Put it in a pet carrier for about a week, feeding and water, making it let me pet it and such. after a week or so I let it out and it would follow me around like a dog, eat dog food at barn etc. Mistake I made was not cutting it young, it got older and hooked my dog so he had to go

There was a Doctor here (central CA) who was a nut for pure Russian boars. He use to get them and turn them lose in the Santa Cruz/Monterey area. He gave a piglet to my Wife's uncle and every time he went into the pen it would charge him. He said enough was enough and let him grow to eating size and then did him in.

Interesting stories! I think i'll hold out for a bobcat wink

My dad had a pet possum when he was a kid. He said it was just like a cat. I've also heard skunks make good pets if you remove the anal gland

I took one home last year and kept it in a pet carrier and in the back yard for a couple weeks. I think he was too big when I got him (around 10-12lbs)and he didn't calm down much over those two weeks. He would still snap at you if he had the chance.

There is a family here in Melissa where I live that has two bobcats. Here is a video of what you can expect. They have an expensive diet and live a long time, so it's a serious commitment. Hold out for a bobcat over a freakin pig.

She could double for Sandra Bullock. Meow!

Agree - Sandra Bullock double. Very nice.

When I was a kid, my sister had a pet skunk and it was a pretty good pet. Pepe'. Had be de-scented and it was pretty fun to watch. Got out of the yard and killed by a neighbor - don't think it was malicious, just killing a wild animal.

Also had a buddy in HS who got a baby raccoon. It was pretty cool at first, but as it got older it turned into a real nuisance. Would destroy just about anything it got ahold of. He started letting it out in the yard for longer and longer times until it just never returned.

Thanks duckbill!
Warning, watching that video can lead you down a youtube rabbit trail that is...amazingly cool if you you choose the right ones.
Cool Russian couple raising a cougar for example.

I have mixed thoughts about this and expect to draw fire but watch the video and read the wiki page before coming unhinged please.
I guess if he eats the hot wife's face off some day it won't be so cool then frown

I see a difference between these people and someone like say Timothy Treadwell - "Ghost you come back here with that friggin hat"

My dad had a pet javelina in Alice when he was a kid. Got him when the javi was just a baby and kept him for a couple of years.
He said it would follow him around town just like a dog and would pop his tusks at people he didn't like but never hurt anyone.

They turned him back loose out in the brush at the ranch I think but don't remember why. No negative stuff was mentioned.

I wish my Dad was still around so I could ask him but will do that some day. angel

We had tons of weird pets. Servals, coatimundis, Bengal cats, we have 2 monkeys right now, and lots of others over the years. I tried to tame a couple wild hogs, but they where to old, and I gave up pretty fast.

I knew a guy in College who found a very young piglet on the side of the road. They pulled the cutters and sniped nuts and the tail. It was like a dog that loved beer and cereal. It eventually got to big and had to be butchered.

We had a wild hog for 6 or 7 years. A friend gave him to me and my brother. We named him Jimmy Dean. Probably only weighed a pound or two when we got him. We bottled fed him then fed him hog feed and leftovers. We never cut him. When we got rid of him he was around 300 pounds, probably bigger. He was tame but with the big cutters and his strength we quit getting in the pen with him. He out grew the pen so we gave him to some friends. Last I heard of him kids were riding him and saw a picture of him standing next a guy and he was drinking from a beer bottle that the guy was holding. I wish I would have taken more pictures of him.

My neighbors had a big boar named Charley. A lady found him and bottled raised him. Had him cut and he grew to a big pig. Long black hair ,long nose and cutters. Loved for you to scratch him on the back and belly. I have been in the pen with him and he showed no aggression but I never trusted him. Old habits are hard to break. He disappeared one winter weekend but the neighborhood had fresh pork. Got to love country folks.
