Hogs Have Been In Invisible Stealth Mode Lately... - 05/06/18 07:12 PM

The other night I walked in after seeing no hogs for the past 5 nights and told my wife.. "Babe we've got a hog problem.. the problem is I haven't seen any hogs lately!!" She looked at me like I was an idiot which is her go-to look for when I talking about anything that she could care less about.. haha! No hogs is a good thing but it looks like I'll have to start patrolling some of our other fields away from the house.. No more lazy front porch hunting for me.. Got a couple hunts here where I caught a couple lonely boars slippin'... What are y'all seeing out there??

Hog activity has been very slow at my lease.

I got my first pic in the last 2 months of a hog on the game cam 3 days ago. Hopefully they become regulars again soon. Seems like when I catch them at a feeder and the 12 gauge starts slinging lead they don’t want to come back for quite a while.

In this warmer weather the hogs are definitely only out at night around here.

Keep After 'Em!

Popped these 4 a few days ago. Three were in a small trap; one was patrolling outside the trap. Haven't had any customers for the last week.

I sat out Friday and Saturday night and didn’t see a one. Which is odd, hasn’t happened in a while. Corn was lying on the ground for days which is rare, too.

We have had nothing in Montague since Jan when I took the last one. Got around 30 last year but slim pickings so far. I hear others have a ton though so they are around. June to Aug is best months for us. Nothing on wireless camera either. Buddy in Stephens is loaded. Several sounders around. Out west they are loaded. Seems the drought area are doing better or they are moving around more to find food.

They have been getting brave over here. I walked out Saturday morning with my three grandsons that had spent the night and found we had all slept through the bas@#$% rooting in the back yard. Within 20 feet of the bedroom window. Now My wife says I snore, but I have never woke myself up snoring. I think they sent the Stealth crew in for the job. Either way I have to level a yard and start sittin on the back porch. HansETX you may have to call me and see about coming over here.

2 of us went to our place in Stephens Co this past weekend to sight in and hunt with our new Pulsar Trail XQ 50 thermals and each of us took 3 solitary boars in the 150-200lb range. Had multiple sounders on the game cams but didn't have them show while we were out and about.
Planning on going back this coming weekend.

Yep.
Had a strong start this year and got 34 in first 3 months and at least saw pigs every time I went out - which is odd for here.
I haven't seen a single pig on ANY of my game cameras in last 6 weeks.
I haven't observed any tracks on any of the trails they were traveling hard and heavy just two months ago.

haven't seen much the last couple of weeks. Had a boar eluding me lately - seems to always know where I am - what guns I have with me - and when I am there even when the wind is in my favor. Momma has not brought her piglets back since I took a couple out a couple of weeks ago.

We are still seeing plenty of hogs, but it comes with a lot of work, traveling to numerous properties, lots of miles, lots of stalks through stuff that isn't fun to stalk through, etc. The great thing is that we aren't seeing hogs on several properties where they used to be common. Landowners are pleased.

Sounds like your eradication program is taking its toll on the bristly beasties! Congratulations!!

Thanks, but as in Hans' case, I think we are just forcing them away, in our case, to leave client properties. The hogs aren't really gone. They are just next door. They will continue to probe our properties from time to time.

I was out with siren to locate coyote dens late yesterday and found where the hogs are traveling here.
Walnut creek runs along two sides of my property for almost a mile and the creek bed is about 12-15 feet deep and 20-30 feet wide.
We have had little rains on and off here for last few months and there are water/mud holes all along the creek bed.
The pigs have the creek bed between water holes wore up pretty well and are using this as a feral highway.
As a side product of rain, there is plenty of cover for them to exit the creek bed in various spots and lots of stuff for them to eat.

If/when it dries up more, they will be coming to feeder for food and to water holes to cool off.
It's just too easy to stay under cover and get food right now.

Connected with this sow last night but its been a while since I've stayed out very late. I've got several on the ranch next to this one just north of Purmela that need some attention--maybe Friday night I'll give 'em a shot.

Been in the blind since 7:30. Nothing but raccoons. I can see moons of Jupiter though in the binos so that is cool. Doe like blowing at me but never show. Will give it a bit longer...
