Broke in the new pig gun. - 04/09/18 01:12 PM
My wife was out of town this weekend so I was keeping my 10 year old daughter. One of her friends called and wanted her to go to the movies, so that gave me a 2 hour window to see if I could whack a pig real quick. I called up a friend on super short notice and we headed out. In the rush to get out the door he forgot his rifle mounted light. Which of course made me the shooter and him the light man, lol.
We rolled into the wheat field and found a little group of three running across the field about 75 yards out. I swung on the bigger sow. First shot went through the ribs just a hair behind the on-side shoulder, through the ribs, and broke the off-side shoulder, dropping her on her nose. I swung through to the lead pig and shot, caught it about an inch below the ear hole. It nose dived as well. At that point the trailing pig reversed course going back the way they came. First shot I was behind it (shooting lefty, I swing L to R way better than I swing R to L), but connected with the second shot putting it on the ground as well. I scanned back and forth to make sure everything was staying down on the ground. It appeared everything was down hard. After a few seconds of silence my buddy said "Damn, I guess the new rifle works!"
Apparently I didn't wait and watch long enough though, because when we went to haul the pigs out of the field the third one was gone. I guess I should have gone ahead and "paid the insurance" like we talked about the other day. I have no doubt that pig is dead though. You could tell from the sound it was a solid hit. We were less than 100 yards from a thick sage brush flat though and we didn't have time to look for it. As it was I got back to the house less that 5 minutes before they dropped my daughter back off at the house from the movie.
I have to say I was really impressed with that 65 SGK. Good little bullet. Breaking the off-side shoulder on that bigger sow was solid performance in my book. It looks like the SIerra is going to be exactly what I was looking for.
And, I really like the way the new rifle handled. 14.5" barrel made it quick and fast, even with a can on it. I ended up putting a little Burris Fullfield II, 2-7x35 with BDC, on it. It was a scope I had laying around from another project. It feels just right on there. 12 oz scope in 3.3 oz Aero rings didn't add much weight at all to the rifle. Still feels and swings good. Plus really at heart I am a scope guy, always have been. I'm more comfortable with that than a dot.
All in all a very satisfying quick trip and validation on the new stick.
