Heading South - 04/04/18 04:37 PM

Going down to north Texas the weekend of April 13-15 for a thermal hog hunt. Three main purposes to this hunt: 1). **MAIN** add some much needed pork to the freezer. 2). Experience what night vision / thermal hunting is about. 3). HAVE FUN!!!!!!!! Wife has already provided instructions- Nothing real big and kill a bunch. Probably just quarter and remove tenderloins on each hog. Taking my rifle and crossbow also. Would love to see what my new crossbow can do to a pig.
Pictures a-plenty when I get back hopefully

Where are you hunting?
Be prepared for some iffy weather, never know about hail and twisters this time of year.
Great time to hunt hogs though.
I would bring home anything under 200 lbs, you'll know if a boar is too stinky right when you walk up.Take those back straps also, ribs are very good too if not too damaged.
Avoid that shield with the crossbow bolt, have skinned out hogs with broadheads lodged in the shield that did not penetrate the chest cavity.
The thermal hunting will be a blast.
Bonded bullets work best for me, hogs are tough and smart animals.

I see now you're in Missouri, you know all about the weather this time of the year. Hope nothing too sever next few days for you.

To meet my people in Bonham Friday afternoon. Not sure if I’ll stay longer than one day. Depends on how hunt goes I guess. From what I heard it will just be me and the guide(s) hunting

Good luck! I always love my trips to the lone star state. I was just there and cannot wait to get back. Thermal hunting will change your hunting for ever. It's addicting!

Well I'm back from Texas. Friday was terrible to put it mildly. High winds, downpours, hail, etc. Went out between the storms, but no luck- did not even see a hog. Guide had something he needed to do in the morning Saturday so went to a different ranch, but same results for early afternoon hunt. Decided to sit on a winter wheat field for the evening. Just a little before 6pm saw a sounder of about 15-20 at the far end of the wheat (about 600+ yards). Decided to put a stalk on them. Got within about 80 yards and decided to take our shots. Killed an approx 150# sow with a perfect head shot- DRT!. Got a smaller sow (about 100 to 125#) also. Watched the field for a time then decided to get the Ranger and pick up the hogs. Took ranger and hogs back to trailer and noticed a large lone boar working his way across a pasture heading for the wheat. Just as he stepped into the field he sensed something was not right and high tailed it back across the pasture. Decided to sit a little longer. By this time it was dark. We then detected a lone hog (another boar) at about 500 yards on thermal in the wheat. Put on a second stalk and got within about 40-50 yards. Another perfect DRT head shot. Since I needed to get back home and had three hogs for the freezer- decided to call it quits (but I WILL BE BACK TEXAS!!!). Now have to process up all the shoulders, hams, and backstraps. I'm tired (9 hour drive home starting at about 0230 this AM) so they can sit in the cooler on ice until tomorrow. Have pictures just need to get them off my phone.
