Hogs are winning

Hogs are winning - 02/05/18 02:54 PM

I have killed many hogs without missing. Have killed them 300 yards and under to 30 yards. Always took pork home. But since I bought this sightmark photon have missed every shot. Back to the range for 3rd time. I just don't understand why. But whatever

Well how many have you missed with it? Is your scope loose?

Scope is tight. Took it off and starting over. Checked everything

And when you go back to the range, what do you find?

Re: Hogs are winning - 02/05/18 03:21 PM

How many of the misses were inside of 125 yards on a non moving target?

This would be the ideal shooting situation - I don’t consider shots on running pigs “misses”

Anything past 125 yards is hard to do with a 4.5x fixed mag scope at night...

What previous scope or setup were you using and making all your shots?

Gotta be either something loose in the scope mounting system, or something wrong with the internals of the scope, Sarge. Since all you did was go from one optic option to another when the misses began occurring, I don't see how it could be either the firearm or the shooter.

going back in about an hour. But the 2nd time I went it was on. Maybe I should go back to my old setup if I can't figure this out. Never missed hogs before. Maybe getting old. Haha

before I used my 3x9 scope with a green light or my DIY night vision setup.

Hey keep us posted on this I've been so interested in buying one of those sights. I don't own any black guns but was thinking about diving in. I always wondered how well they hold zero. Seems you hear lots of complaints on this issue.

I will get back on here later. Some shots are over 125. Some it to 300. I have never missed before with old setups

How do you know your missing them? Is there any possibility your hitting them just not in the vitals? I know you know they don’t bleed much. How is your grouping when you go to the range? I had a .22 mag that wouldn’t group worth a crap. I put different scope rings on it and it improved drastically.

With the moon the way it was recently you just needed to get them in the open and you could see them on 3x with a 50mmobj with a 30mm tube fairly well.

Where are these complaints being discussed with regards to the PhotonXT ?

I’ve not heard or read the same.

It isn’t to say that Sgt. Gilliam doesn’t have an issue, scopes can malfunction, however the PhotonXT line has proven to be reliable and effective for some time.

Unless I ain’t reading the same sources

I've been using a Sightmark for years now, and it's done well for me. Maybe you aren't getting instant kill hits ? I think I would be spending some serious range time figuring out where the problem is.

Why don't you find a spot where you can shoot safely at night and then set up a series of targets at 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards? Fire three shots at each distance without making any adjustments. That should give you a pretty solid diagnostic.

Ok. Problem has been resolved. Thank God it wasn't my photon. I really like the scope. I tested the tightness of screws on my picatinny rail. Some were loose. Put scope back on and at 100 yards it was inch to left and low. Adjustments were made and then at 200 yards was hitting about where it should. Problem fixed. As far as the scopes before I bought this i saw more bad reviews on the atn xsight so I bought the photon. I did find a 940nm light to go with it and can see out to over 300 yards with it. Anyhow photon is awesome. Thanks for all the feedback

That's great, Sgt.! Figured it had to be either the mounting system or the scope itself, and sure glad it wasn't the scope! Good hunting, and let us know about all the piggies you send to Hog Heaven!!
