Need advice on hog bait.. - 12/03/17 11:39 PM

I'm making a trip to hunt hogs on my in-laws land (70 acres) in Texas.. they have some feeders, but don't fill them regularly so they are probably out. I'll be hunting 4 days of a 5-day license.. what should I do, if anything, for bait. Just throw out some corn, or try something smellier? Will that scare them if it's not 'natural' for that spot? Diesel? Kool-aid? marshmallows? pig porn?

Plain corn is all you need.

Like Sapper said, plain corn will work just fine, but if you can, pour a bit of kerosene or diesel fuel on a batch of corn. Corn doesn't have much of a smell, and addition of the diesel might help get the word out to the piggies that there's some chow for them to consider. Not much fear of scaring them off!! If it's edible and they can find it, they will come!!

I have, on occasion, sprinkled Jell-O or Kool-Aid around with corn, but I don't know that it makes much difference.

I'm a big believer in plain ol' corn. But I never expect hogs to find it right away — it may take several days or longer. There's just no magic answer.

If you can get the in-laws to load up a feeder or two a couple of weeks before you arrive, that would be the best situation by far.

It's a 3-hour drive from their house, and they already got their deer... so won't be going back soon.. I'll be there Thursday

Hogs sometimes do not react well to a sudden change in what is there and that can throw off your hunting. So fancy smells may not help you at all.

If they have been feeding with corn in the feeders, stay with corn. I would have the feeders go off multiple times to make the noise of corn being thrown out so that the hogs will be more apt to realize they are running.

In that case, bring corn. As DNS said, throw it under the feeders where they've gotten it in the past. They'll find it there faster than just about anywhere else. Don't spend a lot of time hanging around under the feeder yourself so as not to spread your scent more than necessary, but make sure there's corn there at least every evening.

Probably worth your while to throw a little corn in the feeders if you can and just set that sucker to throw a couple times. Double naught is right, that corn throwing sound is border line a dinner bell, at least to deer. My feeder has been messing up and not throwing due to a lose screw. Went down sunday, feeder didnt throw. fixed it, set it to throw about 20 minutes later. After it threw not 10 minutes went by and three doe came walking up like it was planned. Not a normal time for the feeder to throw(almost two hours late) and they still came through. Might work for pigs.

You say you will be here 4 days, you might actually spend a day hunting rather than waiting for them to come to your bait.

Fill the feeders, spin them a bunch and dump a bunch out. Diesel won't attract a hog but it will keep the deer from eating it.

So I'm in a similar situation, except I'm about 1,300 miles from my cousins farm in TX.

I've found that waiting until you show up and then filling the feeders doesn't bring the hogs in quickly. They seem to start showing up in abundance after we leave. Now I send my cousin a check for some corn the month before we come out to hunt and he fills up the feeders and turns them on.

Your best bet is to have the feeders filled and throwing corn a week or two before your hunt. If you are headed out there on Thursday I'd say just bring some corn and fill the feeders when you get there, set up some game cams and see what comes in.

Yes, definitely put corn in the feeders. The sound of the feeders going off will help alert the pigs to the presence of corn.
