Hogs on Ft Hood are about to be in serious trouble

Hogs on Ft Hood are about to be in serious trouble - 11/30/17 09:31 PM

Got a thermal a few months back and been loving every minute of it but can’t use rifle on Ft Hood unless I’m doing guided hunts. Unguided I am limited to shotgun with slugs or buckshot Or muzzleloader. So I contacted Pulsar and bugged them until i finally got an answer in writing saying that my thermal will be warrantied if there is an issue from recoil from a 12 gauge. Once I got the green light I went to sight in the thermal on the shotgun but the mount wouldn’t fit on the rail which is a weaver so I had class 3 machining machine the gap a little wider so the mount would fit correctly. So now i got a thermal on a 40 yr old Remington Wingmaster with rifled barrel.

cool rig. slugs=short tracking jobs. I like the reduced power slugs, they don't beat me up as bad as normal loads.

When I shotgun pigs I use 00 buckshot. Pair that shotgun and thermal with some 00 buck and you could wipe out generations of pigs in one night! flehan

I’ve already killed around 30 of them with the slugs. I’ve killed a few with buckshot as well.

Why can’t you use a rifle unless guided? Or did I misunderstand?

Definitely a cool set up. Why not use a muzzleloader for better range, aside from the obvious lack of follow ups?

I’ve already killed a coyote at 120 yards and quite a few hogs at 100 that’s plenty of range for me shooting slugs. Plus as you mentioned follow up shots

Oh heck yeah. That's just crying for some krylon.

Will the thermal hold up?

just zeroed it in 3 shots so far so good

To add on to that I got an email from Pulsar after bugging them that said their thermals have no recoil restriction and if there is an issue it will be covered. Gonna try and get it bloody tonight.

Thermal Shotgun strikes again. This was one seriously tough sow. First slug hit her in the shoulder and she went down, I watched her for about a minute and she didn’t move. I began walking towards her and got about 30 ft away and heard a gasping sound and I shined my white light on her. She was still laying on her side so I was just gonna give her a minute or so to expire and then she jumps up and runs right past me. I turned the thermal on squired target and fired but hit her high and it just skimmed her back. I then took off after her, I would run 30 or so yards the. Find her in my thermal but couldn’t get a shot. After doing this a couple times I finally got an opening and hit her again this time by the back hip taking her down. This time I gave her plenty time to die lol. When I inspected her the first shot was slightly high but in the shoulder and I was very surprised she got up from it.

1st shot pass through? What kind of expansion and penetration are you getting with those slugs?

first shot was a pass through, second just skimmed the back, third was a pass through. On most the average size hogs if I hit lungs I get pass through and they drop dead the bigger ones I usually hit in the shoulder and anchor them but no pass through. I need to cut one open one of these days and try to recover a slug.

The thermal only uses one slot? Seems to be not much to hold the heavy night scope against recoil. I would make sure the scope is tight against the front shoulder of the slot for sure.

Quality mount have had no issues so far and it has held point of aim and impact.

What kind of slugs are you using? Assume rifled barrel? Thought about converting my benelli 20, to a rifled barrel and doing same thing . Never actually looked at numbers, but assume that’s a ton of energy hitting the upper shoulder .
