Funny thing last night

Short version. Pull up to the property, get our grit together, and get to scouting. In first 5 min spot a group of 6, kill 4 , then get mad ourselves for missing last 2. No big deal . Next hour not much action so decided to leave and go somewhere else . Head back to truck and spot a single , in same pasture we killed first group . Set out to make him quit breathing. About halfway into stalk, he lays down to go to sleep . Just like ambien kicked in . Cut the distance in half , made too much noise in dry grass, he jumps up to bolt, and my copilot ear holes him. Walk over for hero pictures, and there’s 2 pigs dead....... when he laid down, it was right next to one we’d shot earlier. One of the escapees, didn’t make it. Just small pig, in tall grass. I can’t help but think the last pig thought he was joining a bedding area. Odds of him picking that exact spot to rest are zero . I’ve walked up on bedding areas with sleeping pigs , but never seen one lay down next to a dead one . Anybody ever seen something like that?

Interesting.

We don't usually double back once we've shot at hogs in an area. Maybe we should change our practice.

Last winter we had a single sow come in with a fairly fresh batch of football sized piglets.
I shot the sow and the piglets scattered.
It was a cold night in the stand and we closed the shooting flaps to warm up before going out.
We had the wind in our face and as we walked up to retrieve the sow we could see the the piglets nursing.
My buddy dispatched most of them with a pump shotgun and 00 buck.

First and last time I ever saw them come back like that but that was piglets with a single sow, not a group of grown pigs.

Yes I have seen it once.

2 years ago I shot a sow in the evening. Came back the next morning and there was a big boar on top getting boar business done. Well needless to say Mr Boar got shot too. rolled him right off the top. haha

I've seen piglets return, often less than a minute after a sow went down. The sleeping and porking the pork is something I have not witnessed.
