What do y’all do?

What do y’all do? - 11/09/17 01:51 PM

Going hog hunting Saturday night. First time to do it in a little over a year. During the day you can watch and look at all kinds of stuff but a night there is nothing. My question for y’all is how do you keep yourself entertained in the stand?

Sleep. Kidding for the most part. I have lights on my feeder so I constantly look for motion. I also have a NV monocular and scan the area. If it's clear I also spend time star gazing.

Wish I could do that but I can’t afford something like that. All I have is a scope light.

maybe get a s come light so you can scan by hand and see more, more quickly. When I have hunts in the dark with just a feeder light it is hard to not get bor d starring into the dark.

I use a couple of different NV hand scanners.
I have an old Gen2 1x and a digital 4.5x.
Both "see" pretty well but when it gets too dark, an IR Illuminator lights up the night.
A plus to the IR illuminator is all the eyes light up like Christmas lights thru the NV!

I usually have feeders set for night time use and my phone alarm set on vibrate to wake me up 10 minutes before feeder goes off.
This has paid off multiple times on summer heat nocturnal pigs.

Spend $60 and get you one of these and get some sleep. smile I have mine mounted on my camera T-Post pointed at the feeder, have put them on the feeder too, like the current option better.
Two weeks ago, watched the stars for a while, ate my MRE, watched Transformers movie on the iPad (last one really sucked and I do have blackout covers over my windows.), went to sleep, piggies came at 2:45 and set off the alarm, got out of bed, shot one, rifle misfired after the second round, cursed the rifle, went back to sleep. Just your typical night hog hunt. smile

Do they make any noise at all? I’ll be in about a 15ft ladderstand about 20 yards from the feeder

I am usually listening to an audiobook in one ear.

Well, that would be the alarm part. smile There is a tone with a single light, you can turn the sound down, but the LED blinking isn't going to wake you up. So being in a ladder stand would be different than my box blind which is 80 yds from my feeder. If you're handy and just a little adventurous, you could disconnect the noise maker and solder in a headphone jack. They are so nice to have since you don't have to stay up, particularly if they decide not to come by on a night. Well worth the $60. I'd take mine apart and take a look for you, but it's in the blind. And what Navasot said, though it's more to empty.
