Hog Slam?

Hog Slam? - 09/07/16 04:28 PM

Since I came about hog hunting about 5 years ago, I realized quickly it was my thing. I enjoy it more then deer hunting and overall just love it.

My question is, is there a "Hog Slam" of some sort? My current goal, which will take many years, is to kill a hog in every state they exist in. The good/bad thing is that by the time I can accomplish all the states, they will likely have spread to every state smile

I have already had Texas, SC, Georgia, and Florida. Set up for a thanksgiving hunt in NC. Obviously that's not a great percentage in terms of how many are left.

If you were to go for this goal, what states would you hit first with budget in mind? I am probably 2 years out from a Hawaii hunt but you cant bet the fiancé is counting down the days smile

Also I am hoping to do this all with one firearm to try and add a level of interestingness to it. I have a lot of guns in the safe but I feel my savage hog hunter is a great gun for the job and will be fun little extra on the challenge.

Thanks,
Dale

115 views and not a word, suggestion, criticism etc? No one hunts hogs for the sport and wants "collect them all"?

Id love some beautiful big boars but any representative pig from each state. More the experience then trophy. Figure if hunt 20+ states, bound to run into some great trophys sooner or later

If you want to kill in many states, great for you. Your quest sounds unique.

It's my understanding that you have to draw a pig tag to hunt pubic land in California. I would start looking into that one first so you can build up points to get drawn. I like the idea and it does sound like fun. Good luck in your quest.

Don't care about the slam just thoroughly enjoy hearing them squeal when I shoot them.

Yep that's a great idea
Wife and I are going to do turkey slam when we retire
May just tag a hog in each state too since I make sure there
Is hog hunting where ever we hunt

I'm doing own hog slam In little different way staying at
Home , just taking a hog with different guns daytime and nighttime
Pistols ,rifles ,bow ,spear would be cool
Anyway good luck with your hog slam

NOT all. only those that are sponsored by the DFW. you can buy as many tag as you want and also no bag limit .$68.61 each for out of state $22.52 for resident. robbery !

I don't expect much else than robbery from California lol... I have been wanting to get California sooner then later incase they do more crazy second amendment BS and make it impossible.

As for the hog, javelina, warthog. That seems pretty accurate for a slam. I am set up for a February javelina hunt but Africa is a few years out still. We are planning a Scotland hunt for next October (longest wait ever, seems like keeps getting longer) for stag and maybe I can find hog in there somewhere smile

High fence or low fence? Stand or stalk? Bait or no bait? Be interesting to keep a diary and log each hunt summary and photos....

If you like the idea....go for it...pizz on what anyone else thinks.... cheers

Ohio is reporting in the news, sensationalized of course, of hog invasions. When investigated it seems the crop damage and free range isn't quite so wide spread. ODNR is claiming that the "good ole boys' are transporting the hogs to counties that hadn't had any. I called the office of one of the claimed heavier counties involved (Vinton). A very helpful lady said she knew of no complaints by land owners and those who pigs were controlling them. It is only a matter of time..

I want all low fence hunts and as far as tree stand or stalking, dosnt matter to me. I went on a thermal hunt in Florida just to find out it was a canned hunt... Talk about pissed. I have nothing against high fence (have a couple Rams) I just want this to be a part of it. I see some outfits rub dogs and then let you shoot hogs with a rifle, not against that either. Like you said, make an even more interesting story.

I know in PA (originally from upstate NY) the game reserves were always blamed for letting hogs get out. PA had a small population of escaped hogs which I imagine in 10 years will be an actual problem and I will add to the list. As for Ohio, I talked to someone at "big buck down outfitters" in Ohio a few years ago who offered hog hunts and many trail cam pics

Savage? Life is too short to own an ugly gun....

I have a savage model 99 that just may change your thought on their looks...

That said, what do I need out of a hog rifle other than reliability? I hunt swamp (season opens here Thursday and its going to rain next 4 days) which always has standing water, I drag it up the tree on a rope, and then hopefully bang flop. I own a pretty stainless 700 but its just to nice to torture in the swamp.
